GREATER ADDO NATIONAL PARK & NEIGHBOURING PARKS

The Addo Elephant Park lies some 75 km north of Port Elizabeth. Addo Elephant Park was proclaimed in 1931, today there are over 200 elephant in the Addo Elephant National Park. Other animals, which have been reintroduced into the Park, are red hartebeest, the black rhino, eland, warthog and buffalo. The nocturnal animals found in the Addo Elephant Park include porcupine, jackal bush pig, aardvark, caracal and polecat. Approximately 185 bird species are home in the sanctuary's valley-bushveld vegetation.

ANIMALS & BIRDS
Elephants are abundant in the Addo National Park. Elephant are highly social animals and the remarkable way they look after their own kind can easily be observed. An elephant's great ears are not only used to display mood, they also act as fans. When the temperature is high, the ears are flapped more frequently, which creates air streams that cool the body.

Black-backed jackal can often be seen in the Addo Elephant Park, and they can be heard in the evenings. Springbok, buffalo, kudu, black rhino, eland, and red hartebeest can be found on the open grass velds.

As the Addo Elephant Park stretches to the shores of the Indian Ocean, whales and dolphins have become part of the sightings at the Addo Park.

SEASONS
The temperate climate in the Addo Elephant Park is caused by the Indian Ocean, which provides rain throughout the year.

Spring season is from end of August to September. The summer months from November to March are very hot with temperatures reaching around 24-30°C or more. In April, the temperatures start cooling down. The winter months, which are from June to August, are warm during the day and cool in the evening.
