MADIKWE AREA INFORMATION

MADIKWE GAME RESERVE

The Madikwe Game Reserve covers a vast area of 75 000 ha of Kalahari sandveld. Bordering the Botswana border to the north, the Madikwe Game Reserve is home to the Big Five, which were brought to this game reserve by the largest translocation programme in South Africa.

The Madikwe Game Reserve also offers sanctuary to cheetah, wild dog, brown hyena as well as over 230 bird species. The Madikwe Game Reserve is in a malaria free area. Game Lodges such as the Madikwe River Lodge, Jaci Lodge and Tau Lodge provide beautiful settings for travelers. Guided game drives as well as game walks are offered.

ANIMALS & BIRDS
Besides the Big Five, cheetah and wild dog are also home in the Madikwe Game Reserve. Brown hyena, sable, eland, gemsbok, giraffe and large herds of plains game as well as plenty of birds can be found in this game rich game reserve.

Wild dogs for which this area is famous for are an exciting sight as they are rare animals. Due to their tricolor coat (black, white and tan), wild dogs are also often referred to as painted dogs.

SEASONS
October to April marks the raining season with the highest rainfalls between November and February. During the daytime, temperatures are hot and humid with an average of 31°C. During the dry season, which is from May to September, it is dry and cold with evening temperatures as low as 2°C and only 22°C in the daytime.
