Horseback Safaris at the Plettenberg Bay Game Reserve, South Africa
Guests' most memorable African experience is the exciting and adventurous horseback safari at Plettenberg Bay Game Reserve. There is no better way to view the game which, accustomed to the presence of the horses, will allow them within very close range. On horseback one can go where vehicles have no access and are free to roam with the game or track them down.
On the two-hour horse back safari an experienced and knowledgeable game ranger, accompanies safari guests to share his insight. The horses are well-schooled and friendly and provide a comfortable, easy ride for even the most inexperienced riders.
After the safari, guests may join a drink at the bar and share their experiences.
Directions to the Plettenberg Bay Game Reserve & the private Baroness Luxury Safari Lodge
From Cape Town
The Plettenberg Bay Game Reserve and the exclusive Baroness Safari Lodge are easily accessible by road or air. For international travelers flying into Cape Town International Airport, the Plettenberg Bay Game Reserve is a comfortable 5-hour drive away. Follow the N2 National Highway from Cape Town in an easterly direction towards the Garden Route. En route, you will discover towns such as Swellendam, Mossel Bay, George and Knysna, before arriving in Plettenberg Bay. Along the way, there are many quaint farm stalls where travelers can stretch their legs and tempt their taste buds with locally produced farm delicacies. Alternatively, you can take the R62 from Cape Town and travel in an easterly direction towards Oudtshoorn. From Oudtshoorn you will head southwards towards George, where you join the N2 towards Plettenberg Bay.
From Port Elizabeth
For international travelers flying into Port Elizabeth International Airport, Plettenberg Bay Game Reserve is just 2 hours' drive. Head in a westerly direction towards the Tsitsikamma region, passing Jeffrey's Bay and Humansdorp.
Once through the Tsitsikamma Tollgate (currently R11.50 per car), drive through The Crags before descending down the Keurbooms hill where Plettenberg Bay and the magnificent Robberg stretch out ahead. Just over the Keurbooms Bridge (with the boat club on your left), turn right onto the Wittedrift / R340 road, and Plettenberg Bay Game Reserve is a few minutes away.
International travelers flying into Johannesburg, Cape Town or Port Elizabeth International Airports can also catch a connecting local flight to George National Airport, which is an hour's drive from Plettenberg Bay Game Reserve.
From Plettenberg Bay
Once in Plettenberg Bay, travelers have a short 15 minute journey to Plettenberg Bay Game Reserve. Stay on the N2 and head in an easterly direction towards Keurbooms. Just past the Bitou River Bridge turn left at the Wittedrift / R340. Follow the R340 for 12 km up into Uplands, where Plettenberg Bay Game Reserve is sign posted. Turn right onto the gravel road and you will be at the Reserve.

The Plettenberg Bay Game Reserve is the biggest game reserve in the Southern Cape, situated just 12 km from Plettenberg on South Africa's magnificent Garden Route. Being home to over 2200 ha of prime land on the Garden Route, the Plettenberg Bay Game Reserve has an abundance of wildlife and superb facilities for both day and overnight visitors. The Lodge offers an exciting child-friendly safari experience in a non-malaria area with a great opportunity of spotting four of Africa's Big Five - buffalo, lion, leopard and rhino.
Plettenberg Bay has a temperate which is suitable for game viewing all year round. During mid-summer, temperatures average about 26 ºC during the day. Winter temperatures are moderately cooler during the day but warm enough to enjoy the outdoors. The area does not experience the severe windy conditions common to the Eastern Cape and has an average of only four rainy days a month.
Wildlife at the Plettenberg Bay Game Reserve
Over 35 species of game, including rhino, giraffe, hippo, crocodiles, buffalo and a large variety of antelope roam free in their natural habitat, which is also home to 101 different bird species at the Plettenberg Bay Game Reserve, South Africa. The reserve is the biggest sanctuary in the area for the endangered white rhino. Visitors may choose a Big Game viewing experience in an open 4x4 vehicle or a guided horseback safari.
The Plettenberg Bay Game Reserve provides a diversity of natural biomes, including fynbos, grasslands and indigenous forests, and the property is the natural confluence of the Keurbooms and Palmiet Rivers. The reserve's luxury 4 star game lodge, The Baroness Luxury Safari Lodge, provides guests with an exclusive African safari experience. The beautiful colonial-style Lodge features 10 spacious luxury rooms which open onto the picturesque gardens with their indigenous plants, cool verandas, courtyards and quaint plunge pool.
Built from local stone, the Lodge at the Plettenberg Bay Game Reserve has lost little of its original 'out of Africa' feel and is both romantic and luxurious with magnificent views across rolling lawns where zebra and antelope room freely, to the indigenous forests and majestic Tsitsikamma mountains in the distance.
The Suites are spacious and comfortable, with high ceilings and original polished cement and yellowwood floors. The décor of this game lodge at the Garden Route in South Africa is eclectic and colourful with antiques and giant candelabra and chandeliers mixing effortlessly with leather couches, shabby chic sofas, kilim floor rugs and animal skins. Romantic four poster beds are draped with gossamer fabric mosquito nets and dressed with cotton linen and chenille or faux-fur throws.

Log fireplaces heat the guest living spaces and there are many comfortable sitting areas with a library of books for guests to browse through and many beautiful artefacts, trophies and original photographs to admire.
The outside Boma, which provides an authentic African dining experience, is guarded by two massive carved wooden doors and has a bar and deck built above the dam where guests can enjoy sundowners while they watch the antics of William, the resident Hippopotamus.
Daily itinerary at the Baroness Safari Lodge, Plettenberg Bay Game Reserve
A day at the Baroness Luxury Safari Lodge begins with a delicious breakfast served on the semi-enclosed terrace, which is warmed by a log fireplace on fresh mornings.
After breakfast guests have the opportunity to join the experienced game ranger on a two hour game drive in an open Land Rover or a horseback safari through the sweeping grasslands of the Plettenberg Bay Game Reserve.
The remainder of the morning can be spent lazing at the swimming pool or on the deck, reading or bird watching.
Lunch is served at The Shed, which is located just a short distance from the Lodge, and the departure point for games drives and outrides.
After lunch, guests may enjoy a siesta in the coolness of their luxury suite. In the late afternoon another game drive is offered which is followed by a drink at the bar with your ranger to recollect your experience.
Dinner at the Baroness Game Lodge, Plettenberg Bay Game Reserve Garden Route, is an indulgent three course home-cooked meal at the Lodge with refershing drinks in the Boma.
