White Lions at the Sanbona Wildlife Reserve, South Africa
White Lions of Sanbona
The three White Lion male sub-adults at the Sanbona Wildlife Reserve (who are now just over 3 years old) have been gradually introduced to the other tawny lionesses in the hopes that they will form a new pride and learn to hunt for themselves. (The parents, having been reared in captivity, were not able to teach them any hunting skills.)
The introduction (despite careful management) resulted in an explosion of violence. This had been anticipated by the head of the Wildlife Division, Ryno Erasmus, who reports that the white males seemed to have emerged dominant by a narrow margin.
Paul Vorster, of the Wildlife Department, who has special responsibility for their release into the wild, reports that they have been regularly seen, all feeding off the same kill, but he is not certain yet whether the white lions have contributed to the hunt or are merely cashing in on the end product!
Meanwhile, the original pair of White Lions, Jabulani and Queen, have produced a trio of new cubs! There are two females and a male.
