Award winning RIVERBEND LODGE
Big Game viewing – Children welcome - 5-star Luxury - Malaria free

At the five star River Bend Game Lodge in South Africa, they understand what a FAMILY HOLIDAY really means... Well at the River Bend Game Lodge, Eastern Cape / South Africa, when we say that Children are welcome, we mean it.

Yes children – of ALL ages – are allowed on game drives. Yes, really! Where possible families are allocated their own game vehicle and guide (honeymooners or guests without children are allocated separate game vehicles)

Yes families are allocated family rooms – they have some inter-leading suites and these, when available, are allocated to families.

Yes we have a great separate playroom for the little ones... Fully stocked with toys, games, books, plus an outdoor play-area.

Yes the perimeter of the lodge is fully fenced, making it a safe environment for children
Plus the new Long Hope Villa is an ideal exclusive-use family destination. Accommodating a maximum of 6 guests only. A real home-away-from-home safari villa!

Mala Mala Game Reserve, Kruger National Park SOUTH AFRICA

Wild Dogs Den on MalaMala

A pack of 9 Cape Hunting Dogs (known as Wild Dogs) have denned and had pups on Mala Mala Game Reserve. The dogs are therefore fairly restricted in their movements until the pups are large enough to follow the adults. Guests visiting MalaMala will have a good chance of seeing the dogs either at the den, or when they return from their morning and afternoon hunting sessions. This will no doubt enhance the already superb quality game viewing experienced on MalaMala over next month or so at least.

Did you know? (Facts courtesy of African Wildlife Foundation)

Formerly widespread throughout sub-Saharan Africa, today just 3,000-5,500 African wild dogs remain, with most populations still declining.

No two wild dogs are marked exactly the same, making it easy to identify different individuals. Why such a pattern should develop, and how it serves the hunting dog, has long intrigued scientists.

African wild dogs live in packs of six to 20. The aggression exhibited towards prey is completely nonexistent between members of the pack and there is little intimidation among the social hierarchy.

Wild dogs are usually on the move over a very large range, often covering up to 900 square miles. After a litter is born, however, they will limit their traveling and hunting to areas closer to the den.

The entire pack is involved in the welfare of the pups, which are born in thick brush or in a den.
Whilst many visitors to Africa view the famed Big Five as the coveted trophy on their African Safari, the wild dog is more difficult to find, and is a truly remarkable creature.

Accolade for the Shamwari Game Reserve, South Africa

An Accolade for the Sanbona Wildlife Reserve

CapeNature (formally the Cape Privincial Department of Nature Conservation) have notched Sanbona up a few levels - being highly impressed with the standard of management of both veld and animals - and Sanbona is well on the way to becoming the benchmark in Wildlife Management in the Western Cape. After a recent joint effort between Sanbona Wildlife staff and the Department of Agriculture it is estimated that Sanbona can carry at least double the number of animals currently on the Reserve, so plans are under way to introduce more animals soon.

Sanbone Game Reserve

Cheetahs at the Sanbona Wildlife Reserve, South Africa

Sanbona Cheetahs, Sanbona Wildlife Reserve ( South Africa )

With the Sanbona Cheetah population, there's good news and bad news.

Bad news first: An adult cheetah was killed by lions in a skirmish recently - a common occurrence amongst predators. They don't tolerate competition! The good news however, is that a female cheetah, who was born on Sanbona, has given birth to three healthy cubs (interestingly, within metres of where she herself was born.) One minus and three plusses: the cheetahs are still in business.

White Lions at the Sanbona Wildlife Reserve, South Africa

White Lions of Sanbona

The three White Lion male sub-adults at the Sanbona Wildlife Reserve (who are now just over 3 years old) have been gradually introduced to the other tawny lionesses in the hopes that they will form a new pride and learn to hunt for themselves. (The parents, having been reared in captivity, were not able to teach them any hunting skills.)

The introduction (despite careful management) resulted in an explosion of violence. This had been anticipated by the head of the Wildlife Division, Ryno Erasmus, who reports that the white males seemed to have emerged dominant by a narrow margin.

Paul Vorster, of the Wildlife Department, who has special responsibility for their release into the wild, reports that they have been regularly seen, all feeding off the same kill, but he is not certain yet whether the white lions have contributed to the hunt or are merely cashing in on the end product!

Meanwhile, the original pair of White Lions, Jabulani and Queen, have produced a trio of new cubs! There are two females and a male.

Sanbona Wildlife Reserve, South Africa

The Reserve at Sanbona

The surroundings at the Sanbona Wildlife Reserve in South Africa are still lush and green, which indicates the high moisture content in the soil, due to the extensive rains they experienced in August and September 2006. This should result in a more spectacular flower display in September and October this year.

With the new Conservancy at Tilney complete, the guests at Sanbona are now offered an area with magnificent views, while still being protected from the elements of nature.

Sanbona also boasts an entirely brand new fleet of game viewers. These new vehicles provide guests with a more comfortable ride on this vast but beautiful Reserve!

Shamwari Game Reserve: Leopard Sighting / South Africa

Wildlife at the Big Five Shamwari Game Reserve in South Africa

2007 has produced some remarkable leopard viewing at the Shamwari Game Reserve in the Eastern Cape, South Africa, with the most relaxed female starting to bring her cub, born in December last year, out into the open more often. The cub is in an adventurous mood, exploring the environment still foreign to it. Guests staying at Shamwari have been privileged to see mother and cub on a daily basis and are becoming entranced in watching the development of the newest feline member to the Shamwari family.

Over and above the resident leopards there has been an increase in vagrant activity with at least two other leopard traversing Shamwari and hopefully will settle on the reserve. One of these vagrant males was witnessed killing a new born kudu calf.

The leopard population on Shamwari is maturing and as such providing phenomenal viewing opportunities.

Bushmans Kloof: Vegetation / South Africa

Bushmans Kloof , South Africa, lies at the northern, arid end of the winter rainfall fynbos biome. In certain areas where there are clay-types soils, a unique veld occurs, called renosterveld. Bushmans Kloof has its own special patch of renosterveld, about four square km in area, tucked away at the eastern boundary of the reserve. The origin of the name renosterveld, which translates to "rhinoceros field", could be that the drab, grayish colour of the veld resembles a rhino hide, but no-one really knows. The prevailing plant is the renosterbos (rhinoceros bush), a type of daisy with small and papery, brown flowers. Since animals find it unpalatable, it dominates the veld.Due to its clayey, nutrient-rich soils, renosterveld terrain is ideal for growing wheat and vineyards. In the Western Cape more than 95% of natural renosterveld has been lost to the plough. Indeed, past owners of the farms that today are Bushmans Kloof, used part of their renosterveld area for growing crops. Small wonder that much of this vegetation type is considered a Critically Endangered ecosystem.

Renosterveld is renowned for its large numbers of bulbous plants, also called "geophytes" (earth plants) which have underground bulbs, corms and tubers. Some of these special geophytes include "wild irises" such as aandblomme (evening flowers), moraeas, tulpe, and bobbejaantjies (baboon bulbs); "wild hyacinths" such as chinkerinchees and viooltjies (littleviolins); "wild lilies" like katsterte (cats tails); and even small orchids.Renosterveld's nutrient-rich soils favour an abundant growth of highly palatable grasses and shrubs.

Grazing and browsing game use these pastures in preference to the neighbouring low-nutrient fynbos plants. This tends to result in over-utilisation of renosterveld such that unpalatable plants take over. Bushmans Kloof keeps this under close surveillance. Bushmans Kloof is proud and privileged to have in its custodianship a patch of rare renosterveld with its associated high conservation value.

Bushmans Kloof Reserve and Retreat: Rare Rock Art Site / South Africa

Rare Ceremonial Rock Art Site Discovery at Bushmans Kloof

Siyakha Mguni, resident archaeologist and curator at Bushmans Kloof, can still barely contain his exhilaration at having discovered an extremely rare ceremonial rock art site on the south-western edge of the reserve. Globally renowned for its exceptional rock art legacy of an estimated 130 documented Bushman rock art sites, Bushmans Kloof has, since its inception, shown a zealous dedication to preserving this precious heritage.Remarkably, this new rock art site is the first at Bushmans Kloof to depict Bushman "rain-making" imagery - a strikingly real rendition of a religious ceremony undertaken by the San people to appeal for rain.

This "Rainbeast" site was found on the walls of a large exposed shelter, which is nearly 50 metres long and 12 metres high. It is noteworthy for a shelter of this size that it seems never to have been inhabited. The style of the paintings is also a point of interest, as it corresponds more to the Bushman art found in the Drakensberg, than that found in the South-Western Cape.

Bushmans Kloof Reserve and Retreat, South Africa

At the close of 2006, Bushmans Kloof Wilderness Reserve and Retreat was selected from among almost 300 properties across the globe to be named joint winner of the exalted Relais & Chateaux Environment Trophy 2007.

This exceptional award pays testimony to Bushmans Kloof's outstanding environmental and conservation projects. These include its rock art conservation programme; providing a sanctuary for the endangered Cape Mountain Zebra and Clanwilliam Yellow Fish; its support of the Cape Mountain Leopard project; as well as alien vegetation clearing. Other environmentally friendly practises at the lodge include the cultivation of organic kitchen gardens; recycling waste material; and water and energy saving.

The global Environment Trophy, awarded for the fourth time, was jointly presented to Bushmans Kloof and The Little Nell (Aspen, Colorado USA) in recognition of the respect for the environment and nature demonstrated in such a remarkable manner by the two Relais & Chⴥaux properties.

In April 2006 Bushmans Kloof was placed amongst the top three in the International Tourism for Tomorrow awards, which was held in Washington DC during the 6th Global Travel & Tourism Summit. Today Bushmans Kloof can truly lay claim to an extraordinary conservation success story and this recognition serves to strengthen the dedication and commitment of the owners, management and staff to preserving the natural environment and heritage for future generations.

Sabi Sabi South Africa GAME LODGE

Round the Clock on-site medical attention available

Guests at the Sabi Sabi Game Lodge now have access to round the clock on-site medical assistance, thanks to the implementation of a programme by African SAFE-T (Safari and Adventure Emergency Team). Any medical complaints, from minor ailments to more serious conditions and injuries are dealt with by a fully trained medical team, one of which is based on the reserve, with the others at an off-site facility.

Dr. Simon King of SAFE-T explains: "Traditionally, medical complaints in relatively inaccessible area were dealt with by evacuation i.e. moving the patient to the nearest urban medical facility. Our programme ensures on site response, with evacuation only taking place if absolutely necessary. In serious cases, evacuation time is reduced to 30 minutes as opposed to several hours, which is usually the case on a game reserve."

Sabi Sabi operations director, Rod Wyndham says: "While we hope that we only have reason to make use of this facility on rare occasions, the reality is that having the SAFE-T team on site is very reassuring. We now have readily available resources for medical assistance, as opposed to being completely reliant on off-reserve resources."

Sabi Sabi Game Lodge, Kruger National Park South Africa

New airstrip license

Sabi Sabi Game Lodge's private airstrip has been awarded a Category 4 (C4) Licence by the Civil Aviation Authority, after complying with all C4 requirements.

The new licence clears the way for large aircraft to land on the airstrip, allowing guests to charter flights directly into the reserve from anywhere in South Africa. The three daily Federal Air flights between Johannesburg (O.R. Tambo Airport) and Sabi Sabi will continue as scheduled.

All Civil Aviation requirements, including implementing comprehensive emergency evacuation and fire fighting procedures, are in place, with highly trained staff on site for all take offs and landings.

Sabi Sabi still maintains several stringent self-imposed restrictions. These include strict noise control levels and prescribed flight paths that least impact on guests and wildlife.

Since its inception in mid-2004, the Sabi Sabi airstrip has streamlined guest transfers to and from Sabi Sabi's four 5 star lodges and has ensured seamless travel for visitors. On arrival guests are treated to a traditional Sabi Sabi welcome directly on the airstrip, with refreshments and invigorating lemon-scented towels. A similar reception is arranged on departure, with minimal transfer time between the lodges and the airstrip.
