Learn about Photography on a workshop with Roger and Pat de la Harpe, a couple who have produced 18 coffee table books, written and photographed hundreds of photo-features for many top South African travel and wildlife magazines and who have contributed images to countless magazines and books around the world.
With them they have some 25 years of professional photographic experience. They have travelled extensively in the region and really do know where, when and how to photograph in this spectacular part of Africa. You'll also get 40 pages of professionally written workshop notes to help refresh your memory after your stay. This workshop would be suitable either for small groups of photographers or for individuals desiring a custom designed photographic experience. (Minimum of 6 people needed to participate).
Roger and Pat have chosen Rhino Walking Safaris because they are the only wilderness concession in the Kruger National Park. With a 15km unfenced boundary with the famous Mala Mala and Sabi Sands reserve, there is an abundance of wildlife moving freely between the two reserves. Follow animal trails on foot through this environmentally sensitive area that offers the Big Five as well as a diversity of fauna and flora. Accommodation will be a combination of traditional game drives at Rhino Post Safari Lodge as well as walking safaris from Plains Camp and Sleepouts under the stars.
This workshop will not only be a great getaway, but participants will find a real difference in the quality of their images after spending time with the de la Harpes. It's something that will be remembered for years to come.
Your Workshop Includes:
Accommodation, all meals, twice daily game drives at Rhino Post Safari Lodge. At Plains Camp/Sleepout it includes twice daily walking safaris.
This workshop is valid only for the dates 5-10 June, 2009 is subject to availability.
The trip will only be confirmed once we have a minimum of 6 people participating.
We would begin with an early start each morning as we set off into Kruger National Park where we shoot scenic and wildlife images. As we go along we will deal with any photographic issues any of the participants may have and discuss shooting techniques and look at animal behaviour so that we can anticipate potential photographs.
About 2 hours after sunrise (when the light quality is starting to deteriorate) we head back to base to download the images. After every shoot each participant chooses 3 images for use in evaluation sessions, these being critical to the learning process and held in a constructive and supportive environment.
The day continues with instruction in Photoshop and photographic principles and then, about 2 hours or so before sunset we head back into the field for more photography, all the while dealing with honing camera usage and techniques.
Equipment required is as follows:
- A SLR Digital Camera preferably with removable lenses (a fixed lens camera will work but will limit what we can do to a certain degree).
- An advanced point and shoot camera will be fine for beginners, but it should have a fairly long lens, as we will be doing wildlife photography (e.g. Canon or S5, Nikon P3, P4 or something similar)
- Zoom lenses - the selection is broad but at least 2 zoom lenses are recommended, one wide angle and one medium to long telephoto, which should preferably have some form of image stabilization.
- A flashgun.
- A sturdy tripod.
- A laptop computer with either Photoshop or Photoshop Elements loaded on to it. This is essential. Instruction will be in Photoshop Elements
It is recommended that you have some form of backup medium - DVD's or a portable hard drive. We will have copies of Photoshop for sale at the workshop and also free versions various other programs with us to load onto your computer.
- A memory card reader or computer cables to connect your camera to your laptop.
- The charger for your camera/s.
- Memory Card/s.
- The manual(s) for your camera(s).
