Climate

During the summer months in South Africa which is from October to March, the weather is warm to hot with daytime temperatures averaging 28 Degree C, dropping to 12 Degree C at night. During January, which is usually the hottest month of the year, temperatures average 32 Degree C. Rainfall, which is about 570mm per annum, occurs mainly in summer in the form of afternoon thundershowers. The winter is cold at night and early in the morning (between 2 Degree C and 6 Degree C) but the daytime temperatures are pleasant.

Although the weather is generally quite hot, it is advisable to have warmer clothing available for game drives in open game-viewing vehicles, which can be chilly, particularly in winter. Mobile phone reception is virtually non-existent in this particular region of South Africa and guests are discouraged from utilizing their phones whilst in the camp.

The Marataba private concession covers 23 000 hectare in the heart of Limpopo's Marakele National Park in South Africa. This area is characterized by a dramatic landscape encompassing vast plains, dense bushveld, winding rivers, deep gorges and majestic mountains. Guests visiting Marakele have the unique opportunity to view Africa's Big Five and a multitude of other animal species including rare antelope such as roan, sable and mountain reedbuck. This malaria-free wilderness is also home to the world's largest breeding colony of the endangered Cape Vulture. Birdlife within the Marakele park is prolific with more than 400 species having been recorded, a veritable birder's Eden.

Accommodation at Marataba

The luxurious Marataba Game Lodge features exclusive tented suites all of which are saturated with the sights, sounds and smells of the African wilderness. These tented guest rooms are an intriguing mix of canvas and stone, exquisitely furnished and decorated. En-suite stone bathrooms providing shower and bath as well as his and hers basins and a dressing room are the epitome of bushveld opulence. The 12-tented suites at the Marataba Lodge each have their own private deck overlooking the sweeping plains and meandering river below. Other room facilities at Marataba include an outside shower, ceiling fan and in-house communication.

Facilities at the Marataba Game Lodge

Guests are able to admire the spectacular view while enjoying a cocktail in the Ladies Bar or simply relax in one of the lodge's sumptuous lounges with a book from the library, housed within the stone tower offering a birds-eye view of the breathtaking surroundings.

Delicious gourmet cuisine with fresh African flavours is served either in the elegantly appointed dining room or outdoors on the dining verandah or, alternatively, under a glorious African sky in the boma. Visitors can enjoy a refreshing swim in the lodge's swimming pool when the temperatures rise in the Limpopo Province. The main lodge at Marataba also boasts a Guest Business Centre.

Daily activities, which are offered at Marataba

The recommended check-in time at the Marataba Game Lodge is around mid-day. The lodge's delicious luncheon is served between 12h30 and 14h00 and thereafter the guests have the opportunity to indulge an afternoon siesta in the luxurious suite, laze by the pool or simply absorb the tranquil atmosphere of the African bush. High Tea is followed by an exhilarating game drive with an experienced guide, with time for a quiet cocktail on return to the Marataba Lodge before being seated for dinner between 19h30 and 20h00.

Guests will fall asleep listening to the faraway sounds of the African night - the distant roar of a lion, the trumpet of an elephant, the grunt of a hippo. Guests receive a discreet wake-up call in time for breakfast and the morning game drive or walk, and so a new day's adventure begins. Day excursions to Marakele's Endangered Species Project can be arranged.

Access to the Marataba Lodge

The Marataba Safari Company's 23 000 hectare concession is situated in the eastern sector of game rich Marakele National Park, at the foot of the Waterberg Mountains. The Lodge is approximately a 3 hours drive north of Johannesburg in the western part of South Africa's Limpopo Province. Thabazimbi, Rustenburg and Ellisras are all within easy reach.

Directions to Marataba

By road: From Johannesburg travel to Thabazimbi, either via Brits or Warmbaths. From Thabazimbi take the R510 north for 32.2km, turning right at the Lephalale sign. After 11.3km turn right into Rooiberg Road passing the police station at 1.1km. At 8.2km turn left into the gateway for the Marataba Safari Company. Marataba is 310km from Johannesburg International Airport. Road Transfers are quoted on request. Numerous car rental options are available from Johannesburg International Airport and other major centres.

By air: Charter flights can be arranged between the Marakele Game Reserve and all major centres including Plettenberg Bay and the Gorah Elephant Camp.
