Introducing Madikwe

The 75 000-hectare Madikwe Game Reserve nestles in the North West Province of South Africa.  Before its establishment in 1991, most of the land in this region of South Africa consisted of cattle farms.  Since 1991, the Madikwe Game Reserve has undergone an intensive phase of development as a premier game reserve including an extensive restocking programme with game species which historically occurred in the region.

The malaria free reserve is managed by the North West Parks Board (NWPTB), which was formerly the Bophuthatswana National Parks, a conservation organisation that is world-renowned for its pioneering approach to people-based wildlife conservation which it has practised since late 1975.

The Madikwe Game Reserve is shared borders with Botswana and is 90 km north of Zeerust.   Located within a three hours' drive from both Johannesburg and Pretoria, the Madikwe Game Reserve has become one of South Africa's prime safari destinations.  Being one of the largest game reserves in South Africa,  the 'Big Five' Madikwe Game Reserve is home to a rich diversity of vegetation which ensures a wide range of game; its topography offers ideal game viewing opportunities.
