Bush Trails

The lodge's guided walks offer the more adventurous visitors an opportunity to experience the wilds of Africa in the best possible way on foot. A walking trail entails an interpretative guided walk with an experienced game ranger and a small group of guests. In the interests of safety, the group is limited to six persons. Walks are undertaken in the early morning or late afternoon and run for 2 - 3 hours. These walks afford the unique opportunity of exploring paths that have been traversed by wild animals for centuries and bring back the realization of human vulnerability in the face of the wilds of Africa. There is a great diversity of bird life in this "birder friendly" game reserve. Birds indigenous to this region of South Africa and frequently sighted include, the Bateleur, Martial Eagle, Pinkthroated Twinspot, Paradise Wydah, Yellow Spotted Nicatar, Rudd's Apalis and the Crested Guineafowl.

Directions to the Rhino River Lodge, Hluhluwe

The Rhino River Lodge is situated 300km from the Durban Airport. When traveling north on the N2 from Durban, approximately 27km past the Hluhluwe turnoff, turn left into the P450, opposite the Baobab Inn. At this point you will also see a brown road sign pointing to "Rhino River". The main entrance gate of the Lodge will be on your right-hand side 4km along the P450.

When traveling south on the N2 from Pongola/Johannesburg, approximately 20km past the turnoff to Mkuze, turn right into the P450, opposite the Baobab Inn.

Please ensure you have your confirmation of booking with you on which you will find the access code to operate the electric entrance gate.

ZULULAND RHINO RESERVE / KWAZULU NATAL

The Rhino River Lodge is an intimate and exclusive game lodge set in the heart of the magnificent Zululand against the backdrop of the lovely Lebombo Mountains in South Africa's KwaZulu-Natal province. Guests are invited to explore the untamed bush on the private game reserve near Hluhluwe.

The Rhino River Lodge, KwaZulu-Natal, is part of the greater Zululand Rhino Reserve which has been proclaimed a "protected area" making it the biggest private game reserve in this province of South Africa. Furthermore, this region of South Africa has been selected for the re-introduction of the rare and endangered black rhino. This project was a combined initiative of the 'World Wild Life Fund' and KZN Ezemvelo. Twenty-one black rhinos were released into this game reserve and can once again be seen ranging their historical habitat. Most rewarding has been the birth of six youngsters since introduction, which has added enormously to the lodge's game viewing experience.

The Rhino River Lodge itself nestles on the banks of the Umsunduze River. The comfortable lounge, dining and bar area feature a raised deck looking out through majestic Fever trees to the river below which is lined with ancient Fig trees. The boma area of the Rhino River Lodge is a popular gathering place in the evening where guests can indulge themselves in fire gazing whilst sampling the selection of fine South African wines. The lodge's well-equipped facilities are ideal for secluded holidays as well as for small conferences and workshops. The swimming pool at the Rhino River Lodge offers a refreshing retreat at the end of a hot and busy day in Zululand, whether it is game viewin, sightseeing or conferencing. In the early morning and late afternoon, the lodge's resident family of warthog can often be seen grazing on the lawn, and if one sits quietly one might also catch sight of the shy red duiker, which frequents the lodge.

The Rhino River Lodge, Hluhluwe, offers both morning, evening and night drives in order to maximize ones chances of seeing a variety of animals.

Accommodation at the Rhino River Lodge

The Rhino River Lodge in Hluhluwe features log cabins under thatch. Each cabin accommodates 5 guests and is constructed from locally sourced materials. The combination of thatch and ironstone-tiled flooring offers and amenities provides comfortable for accommodation in a relaxed and natural environment.

Additionally, the Rhino River Lodge also has 4 en suite double/twin units. Each unit features tea and coffee making facilities as well as a mini bar. The units have a private entrance and secluded verandah overlooking the Umsunduze River where guests can enjoy an early morning coffee or an evening sundowner whilst contemplating their day before joining the boma fire for pre-dinner drinks

Activities

Game Drives

Early morning and late afternoon game drives are available to guests staying at the Rhino River Lodge, KwaZulu-Natal. They leave for the morning drive at a time agreed with the guests, stopping at a strategic point, either a waterhole or view site to enjoy a leisurely cup of coffee and a rusk. On the afternoon drive they usually try to find a suitable spot to view the sunset whilst sipping a cool sundowner, before wending their way back to the Rhino River Lodge and the welcoming boma fire.

The lodge also offers night game drives which provides guests with the opportunity of spotting some of the more elusive nocturnal creatures of the bush, such as leopard, serval, genet, bush baby and aardwark.
