Camp Activities

The Savute Elephant Camp promises outstanding game viewing without having to leave the confines of the camp itself. In open 4x4 vehicles, there are excellent opportunities to see wildlife on the dry Savute Marsh, which is also home to the Zebra migration during the months of February and October. In addition to the game drives, excursions can be arranged to see the historic San rock paintings in the hills or the ancient Gametrackers Baobabs.

The Savute Elephant camp provides game viewing activities in the morning and late afternoons. These activities take place on the specially designed safari viewing vehicles, which ensure comfort and safety. Activities are restricted to set regulations as the Savute Elephant camp is located within the Chobe National Park.

As this area is primarily a desert habitat, desert and savannah birds can be observed here. On the Marsh one can find the largest flying birds in great numbers - Kori Bustard, Ground Hornbills, Ostrich and Northern Black Orhaan.

This region of the Chobe National Park in Botswana also abounds with LBJ's - Ayers, Desert Cisticolas and a large number of Pipits and Larks. This is also one of the few places to view the Bradfield's Hornbill which is also a true desert Species. More than 250 birds species are found at Savute and most of them are endemic to the area. Summer is a wonderful time to visit as it is lush and green and the area abounds with all the summer migrants as they follow the Rift Valley south. Savute is also well renowned for its elephant and lion populations and can often add to the experience and memories of a trip to this area.
  • Game viewing on game drives
  • Excursions to the historic San rock paintings
  • Bird watching

SAVUTE ELEPHANT CAMP /
BOTSWANA ACCOMMODATION

The Savute Elephant Lodge is situated in the heart of the Chobe National Park in Botswana, Southern Africa. This region of Botswana is sometimes referred to as the elephant capital of the world due to its high concentration of elephants, which can be found here.

In contrast to the Khwai River Lodge and the Eagle Island Camp, which are surrounded by water and lush vegetation, the Savute Elephant Camp is located in an area where aridity dominates the landscape. Rain in this region of Botswana is rare and water is very precious.

Perched on the former banks of the now dry Savute Channel, the Savute Elephant Camp in Botswana offers a spectacular view of elephant in their natural habitat, with adjacent water hole just metres away from the camps main building.

The Savute area in the Chobe National Park is a dry area, which is home to a high concentration of elephants and lions. Prides up to 40 animals are not uncommon as are sighting of all the other major predators; the endangered wild dog, the mighty leopard, the cheetah and the hyena. The Savute Elephant Camp is also renowned for its excellent birding during the summer months, which is from December through to March, as well as being home to some very rare rock paintings drawn by the early San Bushmen, who once inhabited the region.

As the Savute Elephant Camp is situated in the Chobe National Park, the park regulations prohibit night game drives and walking. However game viewing activities for guests are offered in the morning and late afternoons in the Lodge's open safari game viewing vehicles. All the tents at the Savute Elephant Camp, its public areas and the swimming pool overlook the adjacent water hole. It is not uncommon to see a wide variety of birds and animals from the privacy of the guests own luxury tents. The Savute camp also offers a "Boma" which is an outside dining area where guests can enjoy a traditional alfresco dining experience under the clear star studded African sky.

The Area: the Savute Region of the Chobe National Park, Botswana

In the central part of Botswana's Chobe National Park one can find the unique wilderness, which is characterized by a sweeping expanse of savannah, several rocky outcrops and the dry channel.

In Savute, the game viewing is at its best. Wild dogs hunt in the channel where crocodiles swam only twenty years ago. The Gubatsa Hills in Savute shelter leopard and Klipspringer and rock paintings of early man's wildlife sightings.

Dry season game viewing concentrates on Savute's bull elephants, antelope and lion prides around the water-holes. Black-backed jackal, bat-eared foxes, tsessebe, kudu, impala and ostrich can also be found here.

The summer rains at Savute bring a feast for lion, hyena and cheetah as thousands of migrating zebra and wildebeest assemble in a chaotic pattern on the Savute marsh. Cape buffalo herds arrive and migrant birds swell Savute's 300 resident species, thrilling bird-watchers with their spectacular antics. Carmine bee-eaters perch on the back of kori bustards and red-crested korhaans plummet from the sky in daring aerobatic mating displays.
