Day Trips
Sibuya offers daily trips onto the reserve accompanied by a professional guide. A leisurely cruise up the Kariega River is followed by a three hour game drive and a delicious picnic lunch on the banks of the river. A slow cruise back to Kenton-on-Sea as the sun sets is a fitting end to a wonderful experience with nature.

Activities
Activities, which are available at the Sibuya Game Reserve, include game drives and walks, but many guests also take advantage of the opportunity to try their hand at fishing. Canoes are available at the camps. Birding and game viewing on horseback is a wonderful way to experience nature. Excursions outside the Sibuya Reserve can also be arranged for activities such as golf, horse-riding on the beach, deep-sea fishing or historical tours of the area.
Directions to the Sibuya Game Reserve Reception in Kenton on Sea
Guests are kindly advised to please check in just before 12h00 as the boat to the tented camps departs from Reception at 12h00.
- Traveling on the N2 from Port Elizabeth, take the R72 to Port Alfred, pass Boesmanriversmond / Bushmans River and then turn right into KENTON ON SEA.
- Or traveling from Grahamstown / N2 - just outside Grahamstown take the R343 to Kenton On Sea. Travel for 47km to Kenton On Sea.
- Or traveling from East London and Port Alfred direction on the R72, turn left into Kenton on Sea.
- This is Kariega Rd. Follow this road (Kariega Rd) down to the bottom of the hill.
- Just before you get to the river - Turn left at the last road, into Eastbourne Rd.
- The Reception Office and Secure Parking is at No. 39 Eastbourne Rd. You will check in at the reception and park your car here. You will be taken up the River by boat to Sibuya Game Reserve.

The Sibuya Tented Camp nestles in the magnificent malaria free Sibuya Nature Reserve on the banks of the Kariega River in the Eastern Cape in South Africa. This game reserve has access by boat from Kenton-on-Sea being thus guests enjoy a leisurely river cruise (30 - 40 minutes) and the exciting game viewing adventure begins as guests step aboard.
While the boat gently winds its way up the scenic stretch of salt water, from the harbour estuary through wooded thickets, steep banks, wide grassy flats and sandbanks, bird enthusiasts will enjoy fabulous viewing. Over 400 different bird species have been recorded at the Sibuya Game Reserve, from waterfowl and shorebirds including the Fish Eagle and the rare African Black Oystercatcher, to the elusive Narina Trogon. There are frequent sightings of Knysna Turacos, Sunbirds, Kingfishers, Denham's Bustards, Secretary Birds, Crowned Eagles, Spurwing Geese, Goliath Herons and many others.
The Sibuya Game Reserve is home to a wealth of diverse wildlife including the Big 5 and much more. Otters and blue duikers are a common sight on the reserve. Conservation efforts on the reserve include a cheetah breeding project and guests can experience the thrill of a close-up view of these wonderful predators.
Scrumptious cuisine forms part of the unique and unforgettable experience at the Sibuya Game Reserve. Fine dining under the stars or relaxed dinners at various wooden decks at several viewpoints along the river are highlights.
The reserve spreads over 3000 hectares of vegetation varying from open river plains to Albany Thicket, Cape Fynbos and a grassy plateau. Experienced rangers share their knowledge with guests on the game drives. Activities which are offered at the Sibuya Tented Camps include game drives and guided walks, river cruises, fishing, canoeing, birding and horseback safaris on the reserve or beach.
The Sibuya Game Reserve in South Africa's Eastern Cape Province is home to more navigable rivers than any other game reserve in South Africa. Sibuya's reception is in the holiday village of Kenton-on-Sea in the Eastern Cape Province, about 140 kms (80 miles) equidistant from Port Elizabeth and East London. The unique experience starts immediately with a half-hour boat transfer to River or Forest Camp. Turtles, dolphins and whales might be seen near the river mouth.
Accommodation at the Sibuya Tented Camps
Both Forest Camp and River Camp at the Sibuya Tented Camps provide luxurious and romantic, en-suite tented accommodation, featuring private decks and magnificent views over the river or thick bush. The tented camps are nestled in riverine forest and built in an environmentally conscious manner with wooden walkways carefully placed to ensure no vegetation is disturbed.
Forest Camp at the Sibuya Gem Reserve
The Forest Camp at Sibuya offers 8 tents, a spacious entertainment area, including a bar, lounge and dining area, two fireplaces, hanging lanterns and outdoor boma for dinners under the stars. An added day facility for picnics on the river banks or an impala on the spit can be used for larger events or celebrations.
The Forest Camp is beautifully located on the banks of the Kariega River, tucked unobtrusively away into the vegetation. Forest Camp's accommodation is built on expansive, slightly raised wooden decks and has long wooden walkways through pristine thicket which allow elderly and disabled guests to move around with ease.
Sibuya offers true luxury tented accommodation: each tent measures 40 square meters, is adjoined by a large en-suite bathroom, accommodating two adults sharing in king or twin beds.
River Camp at the Sibuya Gem Reserve
The River Camp at Sibuya is ideal for families featuring 4 tented rooms and an entertainment tent for children. As there is no electricity, both camps offer an authentic and romantic experience, with solar power providing lighting while lanterns and fireplaces add to the atmosphere.
The luxury tents at the River Camp at Sibuya measure 25 square meters and are adjoined by an en-suite bathroom to accommodate two adults sharing in king or twin beds, and sits under an all-weather roof. Decks offer views of the river or forest. Cot or camp beds are available for children sharing with adults.
