MADIKWE GAME RESERVE / LIMPOPO PROVINCE

Tau, translated as Place of the Lion, lies in the heart of the 75 000 hectare Madikwe Game Reserve. The landscape of rocky outcrops, scattered hillocks, open plains and sweeping grasslands is spectacular and free of malaria. The lodge is positioned for seamless views across a serene, bird-populated pan, while the chalets form an unobtrusive curve along the water’s edge. Private sundecks invite leisurely viewing of the comings and goings of animals and birds.

From your private deck or outdoor shower, witness the ancient tryst of herds and hunters, compelled by thirst to imperil their lives. As the Southern Cross and Orion's Belt garland the night, the distant smell of campfire from the open boma welcomes guests back from their evening game drive to a meal of exotic African delicacies.

Tau Game Lodge is decorated with unusual African artifacts, masks and large rugs are decorating the high-ceilinged foyer and vivid animal-print fabrics brighten the settees in the upside bar. Tau’s guest areas include a spacious reception, a comfortable lounge, indoor and open-air dining areas and a bar deck suspended on stilts above a popular waterhole, offering excellent views of animals approaching the water from the opposite bank. Mealtimes are copious feasts of traditional tastes, whether taken in the dining room or around a huge, crackling fire in the boma.

Accommodation

Each chalet has its own wooden deck, which allows one to experience the bush in privacy and is equipped with an en-suite bathroom and open-air shower.

The corner units, on either side of the lodge, have been linked with the next-door unit by a communal outdoor lounge. These chalets can be utilised for two couples traveling together or for parents with small children sharing the room.

The Madikwe Game Reserve is currently South Africa's fourth largest game reserve, created from 75,000 ha of farmland which had been extensively degraded by overgrazing.
