We arrive at Molema - our self-catering camp beautifully located on the banks of the Limpopo, a joint venture project established with the local community - in time for a leisurely picnic lunch and rest. TULI SAFARI LODGE, TULI GAME RESERVE / BOTSWANA ACCOMMODATION |
 |
 |
The Tuli Safari Lodge is situated in the northern Tuli Game Reserve in the eastern part of Botswana, in close proximity of the confluence of Shashe and Limpopo Rivers. The Tuli Safari Lodge is located near the border with South Africa and Zimbabwe. The Tuli Safari Lodge is set on 2500 hectares of privately owned land, and has traversing rights over a total of 17000 hectares. The Northern Tuli Game Reserve extends to approximately 71000 hectares and is soon to beincorporated into the Greater Mapungubwe Transfrontier Conservation Area which will extend to around 300 000 hectares and include parts of Botswana, South Africa and Zimbabwe.
The Northern Tuli Game Reserve is located in the easternmost corner of Botswana, close to the Mapungubwe World Heritage Site in South Africa. Here is a unique, timeless corner of Africa where nature and culture combine in spectacular wildlife, breathtaking landscapes and fascinating history. Set in spacious gardens along the banks of the Limpopo River against a backdrop of stunning sandstone outcrops, the Tuli Safari Lodge is a unique safari getaway. The echo of ancient cultures resounds at the many sites of archaeological and spiritual significance, whilst meaningful visits with local communities showcase contemporary rural Botswana life.
As the Tuli Safari Lodge is so easily accessible from South Africa, it fits well with a trip incorporating the Limpopo and North West Provinces, including the Waterberg, Northern Kruger and Mapungubwe. It is also a natural staging post en route to the Kalahari, Okavango or Chobe, and on to Victoria Falls. With 8 individually designed suites and an established team of friendly staff, we offer a highly personalized stay, which can be as relaxed or exciting as you choose. Each air-conditioned suite has en-suite bathroom, double/twin beds (or family rooms) and sitting areas in and outdoors. Meals are served in a variety of alfresco locations.
Additional lodge facilities include a large swimming pool, waterhole, star deck, cultural and heritage center, curio shop and the original bar built in 1964 around an ancient Nyala berry tree. The Tuli Safari Lodge can also accommodate small conferences.
Habitat and Wildlife of the Tuli Game Reserve
The underlying geomorphology of Tuli is primarily basalt formations and large areas of sandstone hills and ridges, together with a network of (mostly dry) riverbeds and riverine forests as well as open grasslands and marshy areas. From vantage points on top of the rock formations, the plains of Botswana stretch away to the north.
The confluence of the Shashe and Limpopo Rivers supports substantial riverine vegetation and permanent pools. The area is home to a diverse range of wildlife and is renowned for its Tuli elephants - the largest elephant population on private land in Africa. Eland, giraffe, impala and zebra are particularly numerous, and hyenas have regular den sites on Tuli land and provide consistent sightings. A pack of wild dog has recently been reintroduced and Tuli guests have been enjoying regular sightings.
The Northern Tuli Game Reserve is recognized as an 'Important Bird Area' with over 350 species recorded. It is significant for the breeding of the endangered Kori Bustard and Pel's Fishing Owls breed at the junction of the Shashe and Limpopo Rivers. Large numbers of migratory raptors and other species congregate during the summer and a pair of Verreaux's (Black) eagles nest on cliffs near the lodge.
History of the Tuli Game Reserve
The Tuli Reserve in Botswana is also fascinating from a historical perspective. Bushmen paintings provide a reminder of the area's original inhabitants many thousands of years ago. Remains of ancient settlements relating to the Mapungubwe era (circa 1200-1270 AD) are dotted throughout the area, the most significant being the Motloutse Ruins which can be visited by prior arrangement.
