Sabi Sands Game Reserve Safaris & Packages

The Sabi Sand Game Reserve is situated adjacent to South Africa's world famous Kruger National Park in the magnificent Lowveld of the Mpumalanga provinve.  Officially named Sabi Sand Wildtuin, the game rich, 'Big Five' Sabi Sand Game Reserve in South Africa is made up of various private game reserves.

Travellers access this pristine game reserve through either the Newington Gate, the Gowrie Gate in the far north and the Shaws Gate in the south.  The game reserve's name comes from the Sabie River which forms its southern boundary and the Sand River which flows through it.  The Sabi Sand Game Reserve covers an area of 65,000 hectares  which is about 650 square kilometers.  It shares a non-fenced boundary of 50 km with the Kruger National Park to its east allowing the wildlife to roam freely throughout this region.

Getting to Sabi Sands

Travellers have the choice to either self drive with their own or rental car to their selected lodge or to fly.  There are several airports which make the lodges in Sabi Sands very accessible, these include the nearby Skukuza Airport as well as KMIA Kruger Mpumalanga International Airport in Nelspruit as well as the Hoedspruit Airport.  Furthermore, visitors enjoy the convenience to fly directly to the lodge's airstrips either in a commercial or a private charter plane.

The many flight possibilities include the journey from Johannesburg and Cape Town whereby scheduled flights to Kruger Mpumalanga International Airport (KMIA) near Nelspruit are available. From here, travellers enjoy a scenic road transfer direct to the lodge or a short hop on a small aircraft.  South African Airways also serves Hoedspruit Airport which is conveniently located for travellers staying in the northern section of the Sabi Sands. From Hoedspruit, travellers can choose as well for either a private road transfer or a short hop on a small aircraft.   South African Airlink offers flights from both Johannesburg and Cape Town to the Skukuza Airport.

Activities

When staying in a lodge within the Sabi Sands Game Reserve of South Africa, most of the activities are usually included in the accommodation package.  Activities may include the thrilling game drives as well as adventurous game walks during which safari enthusiasts have the unique opportunity to admire Africa's untamed wildlife in their natural habitat.  Accompanied by knowledgeable and professional game rangers and trackers, guests learn about the unique flora and fauna found in Sabi Sands.

The game drives are interpretive drives through the bushveld in specially adapted four wheel drive vehicles.  During the walking safaris visitors enjoy a completely different safari experience. By walking one can often approach wildlife to a very short distance and one can admire and observe also the smaller creatures of the bush which would be left unnoticed when driving in a vehicle.  There is a minimum age for participating in both these activities ( game drives and game walks) based on safety reasons.

Wildlife in Sabi Sands

The Kruger National Park in South Africa is home to a truly amazing abundance of African wildlife.  More than 517 species of birds, 147 species of mammals, 114 species of reptiles, 50 species of fish, and 33 species of amphibians have been recorded in this region of South Africa.  South Africa's Kruger National Park is home to more mammals than any other game reserve in Africa.

Being able to witness the "Big Five" in the wild, which include lions, leopards, rhinos, buffaloes and elephants, is a most memorable and incredible experience.  In particular the Sabi Sands region of the Kruger National Park is famous for its possibilities of seeing Africa's untamed wildlife up close.
