Game Viewing

Zululand Rhino Reserve is an endangered species reserve, covering some 24000 hectares of pristine bushveld.  Recently proclaimed a nature reserve, the park earned international recognition when black rhinocerus and lion were introduced, thus making it a Big 5 game reserve.  There are over 70 mammal species on the reserve, including elephant, white and black rhino, lion, buffalo, leopard, numerous antelope species, giraffe, zebra and wildebeest.  This part of the country is also renowned for the diverse species of birds to be found, with some 450 species seen at various times of year.

The hotel has a sparkling swimming pool that is the ideal retreat in the heat of the day, where guests can cool off or enjoy a cocktail with a favourite book while passing time between excursions.

The reserve is also in close proximity to numerous other national parks; including Mkuze, Hluhluwe/Umfolozi, Sodwana and the Greater St Lucia Wetland Park.  Aside from the game-viewing activities at the lodge, they will also arrange day-trips to these and other parks, as well as scuba diving at the southernmost coral reefs in the world which are located at Sodwana Bay.  All safari activities are undertaken under the supervision of a qualified ranger, whose in-depth knowledge will enlighten you regarding the bio-diversity of the region and the necessity for its’ preservation.

Malaria Status and Animals
  • African Spirit lodge is within a reserve in which potentially dangerous animals are found, guests are advised to take appropriate precautions and adhere to safety instructions given by staff.  

    The reserve is within a malaria zone, and as such, visitors are encouraged to consult their doctor about anti-malarial prophylaxis, to use insect repellent and wear long-sleeved clothing in the evenings.

Children Policy
    • All children are welcome.
    • Children's cots/cribs are not available.
    • One child from 3 to 11 years is charged 50 % of the room stay per night and person when using existing beds.
    • Extra beds are not available.
    • The maximum number of children's cots/cribs in a room is 1.
    • Any type of extra bed or child's cot/crib is upon request and needs to be confirmed by management.
    • Supplements are not calculated automatically in the total costs and will have to be paid for separately during your stay

Accommodation at the African Spirit Game Lodge is provided in both full-service and self-catering formats.  There are four full-service chalets accommodating two guests each, each of which is decorated with a distinctive African flavour and with all the necessary amenities to ensure a relaxing and comfortable stay.

The two self-catering units accommodate 4 and 6 people respectively, making them ideal for families.  These too are decorated with African flair, are obviously more spacious and including lounge/dining areas, full-equipped kitchens and en-suite bathrooms.  The 4-sleeper unit also has its’ own private boma and barbeque area.  These units are equipped with satellite TV and guests are welcome to bring their own smart card for full DSTV service.  Please note that self-cater guests must provide all their own meals.

Self-catering: 6 Sleeper unit: Zebra Plains

The 6 sleeper house (self-catering) is suitable for families.  It features a spacious, comfortable lounge area with open plan kitchen and dining room which is fully equipped with stove, microwave, oven & fridge and freezer. All crockery, cutlery, linen, bedding, bath towels and toilet paper are provided.

Self-catering: 4-Sleeper unit: Warthog Alley

The 4 sleeper self-catering unit is ideal for smaller groups of families and friends travelling together.  It features two bedrooms with en-suite bathrooms, open plan kitchen/lounge, veranda and private boma/barbeque area. It is fully equipped with stove, microwave & fridge. All crockery, cutlery, linen, bedding, bath towels & toilet paper are supplied.
