Sanbona Lodge, South Africa: white lions

Free roaming white lions - 19 December 2008

The recent white lion release into Sanbona Wildlife Reserve, on Route 62 between Montagu and Barrydale, was herald a success, after several years of continued efforts. Over the past decades, white lions have been isolated to breeding programs and circuses, and there have been very few reported sightings of these rare big cats in natural environments. As a result, it has been widely assumed that the recessive gene in the lions producing the unusual colouring is bordering on extinction. In 2003, Sanbona Wildlife Reserve procured two white lions, one male and one female as the basis for a very ambitious project – to re-establish the first wild, self-sustaining white lions since their removal from the Timbavati region in the 1970’s.

The constant patience and dedication of the Shamwari Dubai World Conservation team at Sanbona has now culminated with the recent successful release of an integrated lion pride (including two adult males and two juvenile female white lions) into 54 000 hectares of wild land with herds of potential prey species. This ultimately ensures that the white lions are now free ranging and self sustaining in the wild.

The informative walk-and-talk of the Addo Elephant Back Safaris takes a very leisurely pace set by the elephants themselves. Guests interact with, feed and observe the elephants in their natural habitat while trained and qualified handlers share their specialized knowledge and insight of both the elephants and our unique eco-system.

At the conclusion of the ride, you can enjoy a close-up view of the elephants swimming and frolicking in their favoured waterhole from the viewing deck at the boma - no guarantee that you won’t get sprayed with a trunkful of water though! Sabi Sabi Private Game Reserve, Kruger Park South Africa

New Touches For Lodges at Sabi Sabi

EARTH LODGE At Sabi Sabi

Eight years after first enthralling visitors with its unique architecture, décor and design Earth Lodge is enhancing its interior look with new soft furnishings.

Taking great care to preserve the natural look and feel that epitomises Earth Lodge, designers are replacing linen, curtains, cushions, bedding and some upholstery with natural fabrics, muted colours and earthy textures. Every aspect of the lodge takes its cue from Nature - table legs resembling buck horns, signature furniture made from fallen trees on the reserve, leaf-shaped cushions - and the new décor is no exception. The idea is to entrench the sensation that Earth Lodge was not built but evolved from the natural surroundings.

Each suite has unique furniture and so each suite has received individual attention in terms of new soft furnishings. Luxurious linen is hand made to ensure a perfect fit for the king size beds; curtains are designed to let in natural light and blend in with the rough textured walls and upholstery is in the soft, muted shades of the surrounding environment.

Bush Lodge is also undergoing a facelift with its suites getting new cushions and linen and enormous mosquito nets being draped over the beds. The vibrant use of colour - sharp ochre, crisp green, shades of chocolate and rich sand colours - enhance the beautiful linen in each suite. The main lodge is also receiving some attention with soft furnishings - the contemporary look and feel of the lodge is the perfect backdrop for the use of a variety of fabrics for cushions such as leather, suede and natural linen which are enhanced with exquisite detail created with the use of feathers, metal inlays, hide and beadwork.

A roll-out programme to upgrade bathrooms at Selati Camp is also underway. Each en-suite bathroom will be fitted with an authentic ball and claw bath, stone hand basins, beautiful wooden furniture and soft linen drapes. Indoor and outdoor showers complete the picture, and much attention to detail has gone into ensuring the bathrooms reflect Selati Camp's nostalgic, 'Out of Africa' ambience.

Sabi sabi game lodge, kruger national park

Dry summer for Sabi Sabi
Despite record early rains in October last year, Sabi Sabi has had no rainfall since the New Year, leaving the bush unusually dry. If the rains stay away, the reserve will be in for an extremely long, dry winter with wildlife having to move extensively to locate water sources. Already, some migratory birds have started their long flight North over Africa, driven to an early departure by the dearth of insects resulting from the dry summer. Other species are preparing for their migration.
Those that have stayed will witness the Marula trees in full fruit, attracting lots of Elephants, much to the delight of guests who have had prolific sightings. Wild Dog sightings - always a thrilling spectacle for game viewers - have also been a daily occurrence for the past two months. Still a highly endangered species, Wild Dogs are thriving at Sabi Sabi, successfully breeding and hunting on the wild diversity of prey that calls the reserve home.
Rangers and trackers were excited to spot very small Lion cubs belonging to Sabi Sabi's most prominent Lion pride early in February. The cubs were born just North of Bush Lodge, and the Sabi Sabi team is watching closely as the pride has had little success rearing babies in recent years; losing them to attacks by nomadic male Lions.

Local customs delight guests
Guests enjoying a boma dinner under African skies at Sabi Sabi can participate in the ancient African tradition of face painting (or 'face marking' to be more accurate). Practised for hundreds of years, faces are painted to mark traditional celebrations. A few members of the Sabi Sabi team have been trained and guests delight in transforming themselves in the boma at night.

Rescued animals faring well
In May last year, we published news of a newborn Rhino calf that had been abandoned by its mother, and was rescued from Sabi Sabi and sent to an endangered species rehabilitation centre, Kapama, in Hoedspruit. Feedback is that the calf is doing very well in her new home and was the subject of an insert on the acclaimed South African wildlife television programme, 50/50.
Click here for full rescue story
Also in 2007, a Wild Dog with a broken leg was darted at Sabi Sabi and taken for treatment. She has been successfully reintroduced to a captive breeding centre at Mhola Holda.

Conserving power to conserve the environment
Long before South Africa's recent power shortage took hold, Sabi Sabi was introducing innovative ways to cut down on electricity usage to protect the environment. Renewable and sustainable energy sources are used wherever possible and guests are encouraged to minimise electricity usage. Relaxing under the African night skies with the canopy of stars providing gentle light is a far better way to enjoy the bush than by artificial light! While the 5-star ethos for which Sabi Sabi is renowned ensures that all conveniences are available for guests - they are provided in a responsible way that ensures that the reserve is looking to the future and protecting the environment for generations to come.

Shamwari Game Reserve, Eastern Cape

SHAMWARI TAKES TOP HONORS AT WORLD TRAVEL AWARDS
For the tenth consecutive year, Shamwari Game Reserve in the Eastern Cape in South Africa has been awarded the World's Leading Safari and Game Reserve and the World's Leading Conservation Company at the prestigious World Travel Awards gala ceremony held last night in Turks & Caicos in the Caribbean.
Hailed by the Wall Street Journal as the "Travel industry's equivalent to the Oscars," the World Travel Awards are the most comprehensive and most prestigious awards program in the travel industry today. Over 167,000 travel professionals worldwide voted for their favorites in all sectors of the travel industry. The event was broadcast globally by BBC World and was covered by leading print publications.
On receiving these two awards our CEO, Adrian Gardiner said: "We are very proud to have been recognized as the best by our industry partners worldwide for ten straight years. When we began, conservation was a small part of tourism. Today, we are very encouraged that more tourists are aware that we must sustain and preserve our environment for the generations to come. It is our firm commitment that tourism should benefit all people, not just the few."
