Hideaways Amava River Lodge - Formerly known as Bundox River Lodge

When it comes to unforgettable safari experiences, location is everything - and Amava River Lodge delivers it in abundance.

Perched on a sweeping bend of the Olifants River in the remote northern reaches of Balule Game Reserve, part of the legendary Greater Kruger National Park, this intimate tented camp offers an immersive and luxurious escape into the wild.

From its elevated position on the river’s southern bank, the camp commands breathtaking views both upstream and downstream. Sandbars and reedbeds host a variety of birdlife, while towering riparian trees provide sanctuary for everything from elephants and buffalo to crocodiles, hippos, and the elusive Pel’s fishing owl. It’s not uncommon to spot a leopard slinking through the underbrush or hear the distant call of a fish eagle echoing through the valley.

Raised on wooden walkways and tucked beneath a canopy of trees, the camp blends seamlessly with its surroundings. As light filters through the foliage, the tents appear and disappear like something from a dream—a place of magic, mystery, and untamed beauty.

An Intimate Safari Experience

Imagine 5,000 hectares of pristine wilderness and eight kilometres of the mighty Olifants River to explore, shared with just a handful of guests. With only five safari tents, Amava River Lodge offers an exclusive and uncrowded safari experience where the wilderness feels entirely your own.

Each spacious tent features a private deck overlooking the river, separated from the wild only by an insect-proof mesh. Inside, natural wood, classic canvas, and understated luxury come together in perfect harmony. Expect twin or queen-size beds with fine linens, elegant en-suite bathrooms, and thoughtful touches like workspaces, tea and coffee stations, and standing fans to keep the space cool and breezy.

Your Safari, Your Way

At Amava River Lodge, time slows down. Here, the gentle rhythm of the Olifants River sets the pace. Mornings begin with coffee on your deck as elephants wade through the shallows. Afternoons are spent relaxing in the riverfront lounge or cooling off in the pool, watching the wilderness unfold around you.

Game drives - with a maximum of six guests per vehicle - offer a front-row seat to Africa’s raw beauty. Each outing is guided by passionate professionals who know this landscape intimately. Morning and evening drives take you through plains, ridges, and riverine forests alive with wildlife. Pause for coffee on a hilltop or sundowners by the water’s edge.

For a deeper connection to the land, opt for a guided bush walk, where every track, scent, and sound tells a story. Evenings end with open-air dining under star-filled skies and the crackle of the fire close by.

This is life as it’s meant to be—untamed, unhurried, and unforgettable.
