A South African game reserve of great beauty and high contrasts, the Mkhuze Game Reserve in the KwaZulu-Natal Province is renowned as a mecca for bird lovers, with more than 420 bird species on record. The Mkhuze Game Reserve is home to an astonishing diversity of natural habitats which range from the Lebombo mountains along its eastern front to stretches of acacia, savannah, wetlands and a variety of forest habitats.
A rare type of sand forest can also be found in the Mkhuze Game Reserve. Two spectacular pans, Nhlonhlela and Nsumo, are home to hippos, crocodiles, pink-backed and white pelicans, as well as geese in spring. Mkhuze Game Reserve is 41 000 hectares and was proclaimed a protected area in 1912.
Mkhuze Game Reserve comprises the northwestern region of the Greater St Lucia Wetland Park which has been declared a World Heritage Site. The Mkhuze River curves along the Mkhuze Game Reserve's northern and eastern borders with an excellent stretch of fig forest along its banks.
Visitors at the Mkhuze Game Reserve may enjoy wonderful animal and bird sightings from the three hides in reserve. A Zulu cultural village in the Mkhuze Game Reserve offers a glimpse of the traditional lifestyle and crafts of the KwaJobe community.
