The Kapama Game Reserve in South Africa comprises of fourteen thousand hectares of the pristine African bushveld. The reserve is well known for its lodges and in particular the Kapama River Lodge. Occupying an enormous area on the edge of the escarpment and the larger Kruger Park.
The Game Reserve covers the region from the R40 on the west to the Thornybush Game Reserve boundary to the east, and from the Eastgate Airport Road to the north of the Klaserie Dam on the south. The Klaserie River flows through the Reserve and is much liked by the leopard.
It is home to all the Big Five with animals in abundance: lion, leopard, elephant, buffalo, and rhino. The reserves natural environment and vibrant veld ecosystem provide visitors with the unique opportunity of close encounters with Africa's untamed wildlife.

Kapama River Lodge:

Kapama Karula Lodge:
This unique African safari camp lies on the Gwalagwala site which is one of the finest camps in many respects. Karula Lodge consists of two luxury air-conditioned tents which are the epitome of luxury, five luxury suites, and five superior suites. Each chalet features his and her basin, inside and outside showers and open views onto one of the most sought-after locations - the Klaserie river.
Set on the banks of the Klaserie river which flows throughout the year, the Lodge, translated as "the place of peace", is unique. Kapama Buffalo Camp:
Reminiscent of an East African safari camp, the Buffalo Camp offers guests a unique and unforgettable African bush experience. It is ideally suited for guests who wish to discover the forest without compromising on comfort.
Ten luxury canvas tents, each accommodating a maximum of two guests, nestled on stilts amongst the canopies of ancient trees. Each of the en-suite tents is interconnected by wooden walkways, which run high above the Buffalo bed. The entertainment facilities at the Camp, which include lounge, dining room, and outdoor boma, are surrounded by an indigenous garden.
A quiet swimming pool lies tucked away and provides the perfect spot to while away idle moments between morning and evening game drives. Bush walks, and exciting elephant-back safaris are also available to guests staying at the Camp.

Elephant Back Safaris:
Guests have the once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to ride on the back of an African elephant. Guests meet the herd in the early morning or late afternoon and learn how to get onto the back of an elephant and move to its rhythm as they walk through the bush. Elephants need to feed for many hours a day. Therefore, they pull down branches and grabbing a trunk full of grass as they walk. After walking for about an hour, the elephants return to the elephant boma.

Hot Air Balloon
Giant candy-striped balloons lift off at first light, and this magnificent trip lasts about an hour. Best celebrated with a glass of bubbly, this memorable experience is highly recommended.
Kapama Game Reserve offers the once in a lifetime experience to ride on the back of an African elephant. As elephants are the largest creatures in Africa, other animals give way to you. A video is available of your experience for an additional fee.
An elephant interaction experience offers visitors the chance to get amazingly close to these animals. On this trip, guests get to see a variety of African elephants, which range in age from less than eighteen months to thirty years. After a brief introduction, some of the elephants are brought forward for you to meet and interact with.
Hoedspruit Centre for Endangered Species
In this optional extra activity, a guide takes guests the Hoedspruit Centre for Endangered Species facility where some rehabilitated animals can be viewed at close range, including the infamous cheetah. An educational video is shown to guests who are followed by a guided tour.
The Kapama Romance Platform gives guests the opportunity to sleep directly under the African moon. A billowing white mosquito netting surrounds a giant bed of white linen. The platform and luxury bathroom underneath (complete with flush toilet, rose head shower and his and her's basins) are animal-proof while a radio and mobile phone are used for your peace of mind. A personal chef can prepare a sundowner and a pre-arranged 5-course menu at the platform.
River Lodge Media Room
The River Lodge Media Room provides a space for guests to watch cable TV, catch up on a sports game or entertain the children with a wildlife DVD.
This venue can easily be converted into a conference facility which seats a maximum of 20 delegates. An overhead projector and audio system are also available while right next door the guest internet facility can be used.

Children of all ages are welcome only at Southern Camp and River Lodge. No child under the age of 12 can stay at Buffalo Camp. An adult must accompany all children under the age of 16 during game drives and bush walks.
Little ones at Kapama can play in a sand play area with jungle gym climbing frame, chalkboards and play stations surrounded by bright murals of African animals. Wildlife DVD's are also available as well as baking classes in the kitchen. Short walks around the lodge garden are accompanied by a guide, and the children help to identify birds, trees and insects. Supervised games and art activities are also on offer.
Kapama is a proud sponsor of the Thulamahashe Childrens’ Home, which is a haven for orphaned and abandoned children. Kapama has set up a Trust Fund which it administers on behalf of the Home.
Kapama donated R50 000 towards the Trust, which is earmarked for the building of a new home. A visit to the home provides a heart-warming opportunity for visitors to experience the local community. Guests are also welcome to make a contribution to the Thulamahashe Children’s Home Trust through Kapama.

The magnificent Kapama Game Reserve is approximately 5,5 hours from Johannesburg and routes through Dullstroom.
Daily flights are available to the Eastgate Airport (HDS); transfers will be in open land rovers directly from the airport to any of the game lodges in the Kapama Game Reserve.
Directions to the Kapama Game Reserve, South Africa:
N12 or N4
R36 to Ohrigstad
R 40 to Klaserie
Kapama Game Reserve.
Take either the N12 or the N4 from Johannesburg to Witbank and Middelburg. Turn onto the R540 towards Belfast, Dullstroom and Lydenburg. Dullstroom is set on the highveld and is an ideal point for exploring the region. The village has a quaint old-world atmosphere and is famous for its trout fishing making this an ideal halfway stop on the way to Kapama Private Game Reserve. From Lydenburg proceed on the R36 to Orighstad, through the Strydom Tunnel to Hoedspruit.
This scenic drive through Mpumalanga has impressive landscapes and unforgettable views. Drive up the mountain passes onto the escarpment and look down onto the wonders of the Lowveld.
At Hoedspruit, take the R40 to Klaserie.
For Kapama Lodge, continue the R40 and turn left at the Eastgate Airport turn-off and continue for 15 km. Turn right at the Guernsey turn-off and continue the gravel road for another 10 km. The Kapama Lodge entrance will be on your left-hand side.
For Kapama Buffalo Lodge and Buffalo Camp, continue the R40 until you reach the entrance on your left side.
On site parking facilities are provided for guests.
