Kapamba is located in a remote and secluded part of the South Luangwa National Park in Zambia, Southern Africa, set along the banks of the Kapamba River. The place is known for its romantic atmosphere, privacy, and strong connection to the surrounding wilderness. It is one of only two Bushcamps that remain open from April to January, allowing access to the area for most of the safari season.
The location offers a quiet and immersive environment where wildlife activity is frequent and the natural surroundings remain largely untouched. Kapamba is well suited to travellers seeking an intimate bush experience combined with comfort and thoughtful design.
Accommodation
Kapamba offers a refined interpretation of a traditional bushcamp, combining a strong sense of isolation with elegant and comfortable spaces. The central living and dining area is tucked beneath mature matumi and sausage trees, creating a shaded and peaceful gathering space. This area opens onto a large wooden deck overlooking the river, where a swimming pool provides a welcome place to relax during the warmer hours of the day.
The open fronted bedrooms are designed to blend into the surrounding environment while offering a high level of comfort. Each chalet features a wide veranda with uninterrupted views of the Kapamba River, allowing guests to observe wildlife moving through the area throughout the day. Twin showers are positioned to take full advantage of the river setting, enhancing the connection to nature.
At night, wrought iron shutters can be closed to ensure comfort and peace of mind, while still allowing the sounds of the bush to filter through. Two of the chalets also include raised sleep out salas with small bathrooms. These provide the option of sleeping under the stars or enjoying a quiet afternoon rest above the forest floor.
Experiences
Kapamba offers a range of activities that allow guests to explore the surrounding area at a relaxed and unhurried pace. Morning walking safaris provide an opportunity to experience the bush on foot, guided by knowledgeable professionals who interpret tracks, plants, and wildlife behaviour. Morning game drives are also available, offering broader access to the surrounding landscapes and wildlife concentrations.
In the afternoon, guests may choose to relax at camp before heading out on an afternoon or evening game drive in open vehicles. As the day cools, wildlife becomes more active, creating excellent viewing conditions. When weather and river levels allow, time may also be spent resting in the Kapamba River directly in front of the camp or enjoying the swimming pool.
Walking safaris and game drives are offered each morning, with an afternoon or evening game drive scheduled later in the day.
An iconic tradition
As daylight fades and the landscape shifts into evening, guests pause in a carefully chosen spot within the bush. This time is marked by a drink and light refreshments while watching the colours of the sky change and listening to the sounds of the surrounding wilderness. It is a simple yet memorable way to end the day in the heart of nature.
