Satara Plains Camp: Big Cat Country in the Heart of Kruger

Just 7km from Kruger National Park’s Satara Rest Camp, set along the banks of the seasonal Mavumbye River, Satara Plains Camp places guests right in the centre of one of the park’s most wildlife-rich regions.

A natural spring that retains water throughout the year draws in vast herds of buffalo and elephant, along with abundant plains game, creating consistently outstanding game-viewing. This area is especially famous for its lion populations, with frequent and memorable sightings.

Open during South Africa’s winter season from 1 May to 30 September, the camp offers privileged access to one of Kruger’s most celebrated wildlife zones—renowned worldwide for its big cats, large herds of buffalo and elephant, and predators such as African wild dogs and spotted hyena.

Situated in the renowned Satara region, close to the well-known Satara Rest Camp, Satara Plains Camp provides an ideal base for exploring this iconic landscape. The legendary S100 route, which follows the Nwanetsi River, lies nearby and is one of the most rewarding game-viewing drives in the park.

This is not simply a destination for ticking off the Big Five—it is an immersive wilderness experience. Satara Plains Camp invites guests to feel the pulse of the bush, attune themselves to the rhythms of the savannah, and become fully immersed in the untamed energy of Kruger. As the larger and more sociable of the two Kruger Untamed camps, Satara features 30 tented suites spread across open savanna. It caters comfortably to families, couples, groups, and solo travellers, fostering a relaxed communal atmosphere where shared safari stories come naturally.

The stay includes one daily guided game drive, with the option to pre-book additional drives or walking safaris at an extra cost, allowing guests to tailor their safari experience.

Evenings are centred around hearty meals and campfire gatherings, while days unfold across predator-rich plains that define classic Kruger safari country. With flexible pricing structures, Satara offers an accessible yet authentic entry into the Kruger Untamed experience.

Luxury Tented Acccommodation

The tented suites at Kruger Untamed are designed around thoughtful simplicity—offering comfort, functionality, and an authentic connection to the wilderness. They elevate the traditional safari camp experience into something refined yet deeply rooted in nature.

Sleeping beneath canvas brings a unique sense of immersion, where the surrounding bush is ever-present and alive with sound and scent. Guests awaken to the aroma of dew-soaked earth, wild sage, and riverine vegetation, while nights are filled with the distant calls of hyena, the haunting cough of leopard, and the deep roar of lions echoing across the plains.

This is not conventional camping, but a pared-back luxury that allows for comfort without losing touch with the wild environment beyond the tent walls.

Each tented suite features a spacious bedroom with a queen-size bed dressed in premium linen, soft duvets, plush pillows, and warm blankets. Bedside lighting creates a gentle evening ambience, complemented by romantic mosquito nets.

A dedicated dressing area includes a vanity mirror, luggage space, clothing storage, and a waste bin, leading into a private en-suite bathroom equipped with a wash basin and water storage containers. Luxury toiletries are provided for guest comfort.

Facilities include a flushing RV-style chemical toilet, serviced twice daily, along with a safari-style shower supplied with hot water in the mornings after game drives and again in the evening.

Should guests require an additional shower outside scheduled times, the camp team can arrange this, though a short delay is required while water is heated over an open fire.
