The Pom Pom Story

The origins of the name “Pom Pom” remain something of a mystery. Some believe it derives from the Setswana word Phokoje, meaning jackal, while other theories link the name to the shape of the island, a local plant or an old hunting reference. Another popular explanation suggests it describes the soft, peaty wetlands that can make travelling through the area a muddy adventure.

Whatever its true origins, Pom Pom has earned a reputation for its relaxed character, exceptional wildlife and unmistakably classic Okavango atmosphere.

The camp began as a simple retreat for adventurous travellers looking to experience the Delta in its traditional form – canvas tents, bucket showers and game drives that felt more like genuine expeditions than organised excursions. While many newer lodges have embraced a more polished style, Pom Pom has retained its intimate character and authentic bush atmosphere.

It is a camp for safari purists, romantics and adventurous travellers who want to experience the Okavango in its most natural form. Leopards move through the woodland, African wild dogs race across the floodplains and elephants wade through the waterways as the sun turns the landscape gold.

Activities vary with the seasons, but off-road game drives, night safaris and wildlife encounters are available throughout the year. From May to September, when the Delta floods arrive, guests can also experience the quintessential Okavango adventure with mokoro and boating excursions departing directly from camp.

Location

Pom Pom Camp is situated within the Pom Pom Private Concession (NG27A), west of the Moremi Game Reserve. The camp overlooks the beautiful lily-covered Pom Pom Lagoon at the source of the Xudum River system, with surrounding woodland providing particularly good habitat for leopards.

Pom Pom airstrip is approximately a five-minute drive from camp. Light-aircraft flights take around 20 minutes from Maun and approximately 1 hour 30 minutes from Kasane.
