Mwaleshi Walking Camp: Into the Heart of the Luangwa Wilderness

Your Mwaleshi Experience

Each day follows the natural rhythm of the wilderness, beginning with the first light of dawn over the Mwaleshi River. A gentle morning wake-up call signals the start of another day in the bush, followed by a relaxed breakfast around the campfire as the surrounding wilderness slowly comes alive.

The morning is dedicated to a four-hour guided walking safari, allowing guests to explore the untouched landscape at a leisurely pace. Along the way, there is time to pause for morning tea and appreciate the sights, sounds and fascinating details of the bush.

Returning to camp around midday, guests can enjoy a generous buffet lunch featuring fresh produce, including greens grown in the Tafika garden. The heat of the afternoon provides the perfect opportunity to slow down with a refreshing siesta. Relax in a hammock, catch up on reading or reflect on the wildlife and plant species encountered during the morning walk.

As temperatures begin to fall, afternoon tea brings freshly brewed tea and coffee accompanied by delicious homemade cakes. Later, set out once again on a two-and-a-half to three-hour evening walking safari, returning to camp shortly before sunset.

The day culminates with classic sundowners beside the Mwaleshi River. Enjoy a pre-dinner drink and selection of snacks while watching the setting sun transform the sky and landscape. Dinner follows beneath the African night sky or by candlelight, with a beautifully prepared three-course meal combining local and international flavours.

As darkness settles over the valley, the sounds of the wilderness become even more pronounced. Wrapped in the comfort of crisp cotton sheets and protected by a mosquito net, guests can drift to sleep to the natural soundtrack of the Luangwa—flowing water, distant lion calls and the haunting cry of hyenas.

Getting There

Mwaleshi Walking Camp can be reached by charter aircraft from Mfuwe Airport, with the flight taking approximately 40 minutes, followed by a 15-minute transfer in an open 4x4 safari vehicle.

Alternatively, guests can fly by charter aircraft to Mwanya (Lukuzi) Airstrip, approximately a 30-minute flight, followed by the same 15-minute 4x4 transfer.

For the most adventurous arrival, guests can fly directly to Mwaleshi Airstrip and continue to camp either by a 15-minute 4x4 transfer or on a more immersive four-hour guided walking safari.

When to Visit

The prime season for exploring the Luangwa Valley is during the dry months from May to October. As seasonal water sources disappear, wildlife naturally gathers around the remaining rivers and waterholes, while thinning vegetation makes animals easier to locate.

The warmer latter part of the dry season is particularly rewarding for wildlife viewing, offering excellent opportunities to encounter the valley's diverse game.

Tafika operates seasonally, welcoming guests from May through to mid-November, allowing travellers to experience the changing character of the Luangwa wilderness as the dry season gradually gives way to the rains.
