Nyala’s main lodge is wrapped in a generous viewing deck that mirrors the gentle curves of the river below. Towering weeping Boer-bean and ancient Jackalberry trees shade the entire area, offering cool relief during South Africa’s warm summer months. The central area is a haven of relaxation and includes a swimming pool with a sun deck, an open-plan lounge and kitchen, a fire-lit boma, and multiple shaded nooks with hammocks and seating—all with views of a vibrant waterhole just meters away.

Scattered along the riverine fringe, the lodge’s five chalets are designed for comfort and harmony with the wild surroundings. Interiors feature soothing earthy tones, sandy-beige finishes, Egyptian cotton linens, and handcrafted wooden furniture. Each chalet includes a luxurious bathroom with deep soaking tubs, indoor and outdoor showers, mosquito nets, air conditioning, and soft lighting to create an inviting evening ambiance.

Daily Game Drives

Twice-daily game drives depart at sunrise and late afternoon—timed perfectly to catch the activity of the reserve’s Big 5 and other nocturnal wildlife. All drives are conducted in open-topped 4x4 vehicles, led by experienced guides.

Sundowners & Morning Coffee Stops

Morning drives include a scenic coffee break, while afternoon drives pause for sundowners at picturesque spots, complete with your choice of drinks and light snacks.

Boma Dinners Under the Stars

Getting There

By Road

From Johannesburg, it’s roughly a 6-hour scenic drive to the lodge. Roads within the Balule Reserve are well-marked and wildlife sightings often begin before you even arrive. Private or scheduled road transfers can be arranged through our reservations team.

By Air

The most convenient option is flying into Hoedspruit Eastgate Airport, which receives daily flights from Johannesburg and Cape Town. Most flights arrive by midday, allowing enough time to join the afternoon game drive. Your host will meet you at the airport—just a 40-minute drive from the lodge.

Alternatively, Phalaborwa Airport is also an option, though it is about 2.5 hours from Nyala Safari Lodge.
