The Shikwari Game Reserve, near Hoedspruit in the Limpopo Province of South Africa, offers a choice of two camps in a family-friendly environment.
Giraffe, Zebra, Wildebeest, Kudu, Impala, Nyala, Waterbuck, Bushbuck, Duiker and Ostrich plus a multitude of birds to spot, all roaming freely on the reserve. Relax on the decked veranda, absorb the outstretched views followed by a dip in the sparkling pool.

The Shikwari Knobthorn Suite is a four-star rated camp, offering a fully licensed bar and lounge with premium DSTV, and free Wi-Fi and pool. The Six luxury thatched suites each tucked into the natural bush; offer a private bathroom and outdoor shower, a comfortable sitting area plus a small patio with stylish furniture, sleep upon a choice of bed arrangements adorned with luxurious percale linen.
Be welcomed with a tray of freshly ground coffee, a choice of quality teas & homemade cookies as well as a mini-fridge (which can be stocked on request). The Turndown service provides homemade Shikwari nougat and magazines. Dining is homemade dishes using local ingredients and prides itself in South African favourite dishes including dishes such as bobotie and malva pudding.
Pangolin offers a more budget option, however still very comfortable, with four traditional thatched rondavels. Two of which, Hornbill & Woodpecker, offer a “Bush Bathroom” which is semi-open air, comprising of an outdoor shower and a covered toilet with a basin. The other two, Shrike & Drongo, share a separate bathroom and outdoor shower suitable for four friends together, and ideal for families with teenagers.
All the beds offer luxury percale linen and bath towels. Each of the rooms has a ceiling fan, a wardrobe, a seating area, and a hospitality tray. The Hornbill Rondavel has besides an aircon system.
The shared lounge offers Premium DSTV and a pool to relax in. Meals are taken at the main lodge. The pangolin lodge is designed for outdoor cooking only within the boma, ideal for braais (BBQ) and a microwave is available in the lounge. Pangolin guests can book the 'braai and pudding pack' or the more romantic set three-course dinner. Guests have the option of providing their evening meals if preferred. Guests need to provide their tableware and charcoal, alongside being prepared with a personal lantern.
Kruger National Park entrance gates are about an hours drive away and will allow you to see the big five. Shikwari Game Reserve can pack you breakfast and you can have one of the reserve's guides to escort you on an informative days drive.
The Panorama Route and Graskop Gorge Lift, Jessica Hippo and Moholoholo Rehabilitation Centre are all within easy reach of the lodge. Blyde River Canyon is an hour and a half away and offers spectacular scenery.
Boat trips on the dam in the canyon can be arranged to see the falls, crocodiles and hippos. Several walks and hikes are available in the area ideal for nature enthusiasts. Outings to the Lisbon Falls, Berlin Falls, The Three Rondavels, The View, God’s Window, Burkes Luck Potholes, Mac Mac Falls & Pools are all optional visits within this.
