Day Visitors

Day visitors are welcome at Shingwedzi and can enjoy a designated braai and picnic area just inside the camp gate, overlooking the Shingwedzi River. This area is connected to the main restaurant and reception by a wooden bridge. Another excellent picnic spot, Babalala, lies approximately 30 km north of the camp.

Travel Information

From Central Gauteng via Punda Maria Gate:

• Take the N1 north to Polokwane
• At Makhado (Louis Trichardt), join the R524 and follow it for ±140 km to reach Punda Maria Gate
• Allow 5 to 6 hours to reach the gate
• From the gate, it’s approximately 71 km (3 hours) to Shingwedzi—give yourself extra time to enjoy the game viewing along the way.

Flora & Fauna

Although game densities can be lower in the Mopane-dominated areas, the alluvial plains along the Shingwedzi River offer rewarding sightings. Look out for:

• Browsers: Kudu, impala, bushbuck, nyala, duiker, Sharpe’s grysbok
• Grazers: Waterbuck, buffalo
• Common species: Elephant, vervet monkey, baboon, tree squirrels
• Predators: Lion, leopard, spotted hyena, and occasionally wild dog
• Special sightings: Cheetah are often seen north of Babalala Picnic Site
• Rare antelope species: Roan, sable, tsessebe, eland, and Lichtenstein’s hartebeest.

Shingwedzi lies within a region of riverine vegetation, with large trees lining the riverbanks. These areas give way to alluvial plains, formed by centuries of flooding, resulting in more open terrain and sparse grass cover.
