Wilderness Usawa Serengeti
A Luxury Mobile Safari in the Heart of Tanzania

Imagine an endless African horizon, where vast golden plains stretch beneath brilliant blue skies and wildlife moves freely across the landscape. Herds gather at waterholes, young are born, predators follow their instincts, and millions of animals move with the rhythm of the seasons.

This remarkable natural balance is captured in the name Usawa, the Kiswahili word for balance. It reflects the extraordinary relationship between the Serengeti's wildlife, landscapes and ever-changing seasons — a delicate harmony that has shaped this iconic ecosystem for generations.

Follow the Great Migration

Wilderness Usawa Serengeti offers a truly unique way to experience Tanzania's legendary Great Wildebeest Migration. Unlike a traditional safari camp that remains in one location, Usawa is fully mobile, moving in response to the ever-changing movements of the herds.

Drawing on more than 30 years of Serengeti experience, local knowledge, current wildlife movements and weather conditions, the camp is positioned where the wildlife action is happening — rather than simply where it was previously.

When the herds change direction, Usawa changes with them. This flexibility places guests closer to one of nature's greatest spectacles while avoiding the crowds often found at more established migration hotspots.

Intimate, Exclusive & Sustainable

Usawa Serengeti accommodates a maximum of just 12 guests in six beautifully appointed en-suite safari tents, creating an intimate and highly personalised safari experience. The entire camp can also be reserved exclusively, making it ideal for families, friends or private groups.

Designed to leave as little impact as possible, the camp moves without leaving permanent structures behind. Solar power provides the camp's energy, while thoughtful design ensures guests can enjoy modern comforts including hot water and Wi-Fi without compromising the wilderness experience.

Here, luxury is defined not by excess, but by privacy, authenticity and the privilege of being immersed in nature.

Exceptional Cuisine

Dining at Usawa is fresh, creative and inspired by Tanzania. Menus focus on locally sourced ingredients and seasonal produce, supporting nearby farmers, suppliers, small businesses and communities.

Thoughtful preparation and inventive menus help minimise food waste, while every meal offers a delicious combination of nutritious ingredients and refined safari dining.

From relaxed breakfasts after an early game drive to memorable dinners beneath the African sky, every meal forms part of the experience.

Guided Walking Safaris

Where permitted, explore the wilderness on foot and discover the smaller details of the ecosystem that are easily missed from a vehicle. Guided walks offer a more intimate connection with the landscape.

Birding

With more than 500 bird species recorded across the Serengeti, the region offers outstanding opportunities for bird enthusiasts, from colourful smaller species to impressive birds of prey.

Stargazing

Far from city lights, the Serengeti's night sky is spectacular. After dark, look upwards to experience an extraordinary display of stars stretching across the African wilderness.

Discover Usawa's Serengeti Locations

Because the camp is mobile, guests can experience different regions of the Serengeti throughout the migration cycle.

Usawa Lamai

Located just north of the Mara River, Lamai is characterised by wide open grasslands dotted with Balanites trees. From around mid-July, the area becomes particularly lively as migrating herds arrive for the rutting season.

Compared with the better-known Kogatende area, Lamai offers a quieter and more spacious wilderness experience, remaining rewarding even after the main migration has moved on.

Usawa Grumeti

The Grumeti region forms an important western corridor of the Serengeti, where the winding Grumeti River passes through riverine forests, open grasslands and the striking Simiti Hills.

From approximately May to July, migrating herds move through this region, gathering around the Ndabaka Plains. The area also offers excellent year-round wildlife viewing beyond the migration itself.

Usawa Southern Plains

Created from ancient volcanic ash, the Southern Plains are remarkably fertile and expansive. During calving season, enormous herds spread across the open grasslands, with thousands of young animals born within a relatively short period.

The concentration of newborns naturally attracts predators, creating exceptional opportunities to witness the dramatic interaction between hunter and prey. It is also one of the best places to appreciate the extraordinary scale of the Great Migration.

Usawa Northern Hills

Nestled among the remote Namylumba Hills, this secluded location offers an opportunity to experience the migration away from the busiest safari areas.

Two natural watercourses close to camp attract wildlife throughout the year, including a resident lion pride frequently encountered on game drives. The area also provides access to the Mara River crossings while offering the chance to explore a quieter, less-travelled part of the Serengeti.

Leopard sightings are possible, and on rare occasions even rhino may be encountered.

A Safari That Moves With Nature

Wilderness Usawa Serengeti offers something few safari camps can provide: the ability to follow the rhythm of the wilderness itself.

With an intimate camp, minimal environmental footprint, exceptional guiding and the freedom to relocate according to the movement of the Great Migration, Usawa brings guests remarkably close to one of Africa's greatest natural spectacles.

Here, the camp moves with the Serengeti — allowing you to experience the migration where nature intended it to be.
