Safari Gem Xugana Island Lodge - Okavango Delta (Botswana)

Water from the highlands of Angola travels over a thousand kilometres through the Kalahari sands of Botswana, finally spreading into the Okavango Delta. In this extraordinary landscape, the desert receives water, and life flourishes in abundance.

The delta forms a complex maze of channels, islands, and lagoons. Elephants roam in herds, buffalo wander through the shallows, and antelope move with lightning speed while lions follow their paths. Fish eagles cry sharply above, and storks walk gracefully through the waters on long, elegant legs. At the heart of this ecosystem, water rests in the Xugana Lagoon, one of the most scenic and permanent water sites in the Okavango Delta. Xugana Island Lodge is based here, providing an exceptional platform from which to experience this ecological wonder.

The Accommodation

At Xugana Island Lodge, the presence of water is constant—the sunlight sparkling on narrow channels, lilies floating like coins, and stars reflecting in the lagoon at night. Situated on a private island within a UNESCO World Heritage Site, the location offers complete immersion in one of the planet’s most vital natural networks.

Multi-level decks provide sweeping views of the lagoon from the pool, bar, daybeds shaded by towering mahoganies, and covered or open-air dining areas. An overwater fire-deck extends across the lagoon, creating a serene space to watch the stars at night. The design emphasizes connection to the environment while maintaining privacy, with luxury en suite tents and a two-bedroom family tent positioned along the island’s edge.

Each tent is inspired by the lagoon’s hues and natural textures. Private enclosed decks provide immersive views and a seamless indoor-outdoor experience. Two tents can be interleading, offering shared accommodation for families or friends. Only 22 guests occupy the island at a time, ensuring tranquility and privacy.

Accommodation

Lagoon-facing safari suites are generously spaced and surrounded by foliage for true privacy. Interiors incorporate blues reflecting the deep Delta waters, woven textures inspired by the land, and features that bring guests close to the wildlife. Each suite includes an en suite bathroom with indoor and outdoor showers. Viewing decks provide expansive, private perspectives of the lagoon, offering front-row access to the rhythms of the Okavango Delta.
