About the Safari: Discover Zakouma
Hidden deep in the heart of Central Africa, Zakouma National Park is one of the continent’s most extraordinary wilderness areas. Remote and largely unexplored, the park offers a truly authentic safari experience far from traditional tourist routes.
Since African Parks assumed management in 2010, Zakouma has undergone an extraordinary transformation. Once heavily affected by poaching, it now stands as one of Africa’s most inspiring conservation success stories.
Today, vast herds of elephants once again roam the floodplains, predator populations are recovering, and rare antelope species flourish. The skies are alive with birdlife, while the surrounding region offers opportunities to engage with nomadic communities and learn about their enduring cultures.
This expedition is more than a safari — it is a chance to witness a powerful conservation revival firsthand.
Day-by-Day Itinerary
Day 1 – Arrival in N’Djamena
Arrive in N’Djamena, the vibrant capital of Chad, and transfer to Hotel Le Residence for your first evening.
The city offers a fascinating introduction to Chad, with lively markets, diverse cuisine and a rich blend of Sahelian and Saharan cultural influences.
Days 2–8 – Zakouma National Park
Travel approximately 800 km east by Cessna Caravan aircraft to reach Zakouma National Park, where you will spend the next seven nights at Camp Nomade.
This unique seasonal camp operates for only three months each year, before being dismantled ahead of the rainy season. Owned and managed by African Parks, the camp ensures that your stay directly contributes to the park’s conservation and protection.
The camp’s design draws inspiration from traditional Sahelian nomadic architecture, featuring locally woven fabrics, brass details and handcrafted décor.
Each spacious tent includes:
Camp Nomade offers authentic comfort combined with true adventure, creating an immersive safari experience in one of Africa’s last great wilderness areas.
The Safari Experience
Each day’s activities follow the rhythm of the bush and your interests.
With 66 recorded mammal species, possible wildlife sightings include:
Zakouma is also a paradise for birdwatchers. The park is home to 388 recorded bird species, including 40 species of raptor and the spectacular carmine bee-eater. One of the most unforgettable sights is the swirling clouds of red-billed quelea moving across the sky.
Day 9 – Return to N’Djamena
Fly back to N’Djamena for your final evening before departing for home.
Many guests choose to extend their journey with a week-long visit to Ethiopia, which complements the Chad experience beautifully.
Best Time to Visit
The dry season (November–April) is the ideal time to explore Zakouma National Park, when wildlife gathers around water sources and sightings are particularly rewarding.
During the wet season (May–October), certain areas may become flooded and wildlife disperses more widely, although this period can be excellent for migratory birdwatching.
