Zambia is rich in scenery and wildlife and is known for its wide open spaces and unspoiled landscapes. The region offers a rare opportunity to escape busy holiday environments and enjoy a natural setting that has remained largely unchanged for generations.

Chundukwa River Lodge is based on a horse ranch located 25 kilometres from Victoria Falls. The location provides convenient access for exploring the wider area while offering a quiet environment suited for nature lovers and travellers seeking peace, space and time to reconnect. Guests can spend time by the river, enjoy horse riding, practice yoga or appreciate the extensive birdlife that the region is known for.

The owners focus on hosting visitors, working with surrounding communities to encourage sustainable living methods and managing horses at both the ranch and the sister operation, Zambian Horseback Safaris, in the Simalaha Wildlife Conservancy.  The setting is designed to give space for travellers and their companions to engage with the natural surroundings.

Experience the outside, inside

The place offers a quiet and natural environment with a focus on comfort. Accommodation includes five riverside chalets and a private cottage, each designed to provide a sense of connection to the landscape.

The Chundukwa Experience

WAKE UP WITH THE SUN
Guests staying in the riverside chalets or the family friendly cottage can wake to views of the Zambezi River and the sounds of surrounding wildlife. The landscape changes throughout the day, offering a constant view of the river environment.

MAP YOUR OWN DAYS
The location is suitable for quiet rest as well as exploration. A selection of in house experiences is available, and further activities can be arranged in the surrounding area. Some options are seasonal and depend on the movement and water levels of the Zambezi River. The indigenous garden offers quiet places to sit, reflect or spend time outdoors.

PRIVATE STABLES
The stables are home to the horses based on the property. These horses are calm and accustomed to attention and are available for trail riding for all levels of experience. Zambian Horseback Safaris, based in the Simalaha Wildlife Conservancy, offers multiday riding experiences for intermediate riders and above.

When to visit Zambia

Zambia offers rewarding travel throughout the year, with each season bringing its own atmosphere.

January to February:
Warm, humid weather with afternoon storms creates lush green landscapes. Victoria Falls starts building strength. Birdlife is abundant and the region is peaceful with fewer visitors.

March to April:
The rains soften and the land remains colourful. Victoria Falls reaches peak flow, offering dramatic views, strong mist and vivid rainbows.

May to June:
Cooler temperatures arrive and the dry season begins. Wildlife moves toward rivers. Clear skies make this a strong period for walking safaris and river cruises. The horse safari season in the Simalaha Wildlife Conservancy begins at the end of June.

July to August:
Dry winter months with cool mornings and warm days. Wildlife gathers along the riverfront and visibility improves at the Falls. Photographers enjoy crisp light and clear views.

September to October:
Hot summer conditions bring the highest concentration of wildlife. River based sightings are excellent and birdlife is particularly active. Local parks such as Mosi Oa Tunya and Chobe offer strong viewing.

November:
Rain is expected. The landscape shifts from dry gold to vibrant green, often within days. This transitional period is quiet and well suited for travellers seeking peace.

December:
The green season is established, bringing dramatic skies, young wildlife and excellent birding. Victoria Falls begins to build again, presenting a different seasonal character.
