Evolve Back Gham Dhao Lodge

★ ★ ★ ★ ★

The Evolve Back Gham Dhao Lodge in Botswana features three distinct styles of tented accommodation, thoughtfully spaced to provide guests with a sense of seclusion and intimacy. With a capacity of just twenty visitors, it offers an exclusive experience that reflects modern luxury.

Set within an expansive 11,000-hectare private reserve, this upscale safari retreat immerses guests in the many wonders of the Kalahari—from its celebrated night skies and remarkable wildlife to the traditions of the San community and their ancient heritage.

The Kalahari Desert lies on the inland plateau of Southern Africa and consists of a vast, gently rolling, semi-arid sandy savannah. While not a true desert, it lacks surface water. This distinctive environment, rich in biodiversity, remains one of the least explored ecosystems in the world.

Ecology

The Central Kalahari Game Reserve forms a unique ecological zone—a transitional area connecting the northern woodlands with the southern thornveld and scrublands. Its landscape is shaped by two major features, the Okwa and Deception valleys, which divide the reserve into three separate regions.

People

The Kalahari has long been home to the San people, often referred to as “the first people,” and regarded as one of the world’s oldest cultures. Their society is egalitarian, valuing equality between men and women, and measuring wealth beyond material abundance. Traditionally, they lead a semi-nomadic lifestyle.

Wildlife

The region supports a wide variety of animals specially adapted to its environment. Predators such as lions, leopards, and brown hyenas roam alongside antelope like gemsbok, blue wildebeest, kudu, and eland. The area is also a haven for birdlife, with over 250 species recorded.

Geography

The Central Kalahari Game Reserve stretches across a vast area bordered by the Bakalahari Rise to the south, Ghanzi Ridge to the west, Ngwato Escarpment to the east, and the Mabeleapudi–Dinokwane hills to the north. It consists of three main zones: dune woodlands, central grasslands, and thornveld.

Accommodation

The lodge offers three categories of tented suites, each carefully positioned to maintain privacy and tranquility. Hosting no more than twenty guests, it ensures a refined and intimate stay.

Sky-Luxe Tent

These luxurious tents are set beneath thatched roofs for natural cooling and are spaced apart for maximum peace. Inspired by traditional San dwellings, each features a unique sky bed that offers sweeping views of the Kalahari skies. The tents include separate living and sleeping areas, indoor bathrooms, open-air bathing spaces, and spacious outdoor decks. Amenities include wardrobes, a refrigerator, and tea/coffee-making facilities.

A large four-poster bed draped with an air-conditioned mosquito net adds a romantic touch. Guests can also enjoy sleeping beneath the stars on the elevated sky bed. Bathrooms are well-appointed with twin basins, a shower, private toilet, clawfoot bathtub with bush views, and an outdoor shower.

Kalahari Classic Family Tent

Designed for families, this exclusive unit consists of two interconnected luxury tents linked by a shared deck. It provides ample space, privacy, and comfort for group stays.

Each tent includes a cozy sleeping area and en-suite facilities with indoor and outdoor showers, along with tea and coffee amenities. Comfortable double or twin beds with mosquito nets ensure a secure and restful environment. Bathrooms feature twin basins and hot and cold running water (non-potable).

The décor—featuring dark flooring, rustic furnishings, and carefully selected fabrics—evokes the spirit of early explorers.

Dining

Dining at the lodge is a memorable experience. A dedicated culinary team prepares a variety of dishes with enthusiasm, including fresh salads, homemade breads, game meats, and traditional Botswana cuisine.

Bush Dinners

Enjoy meals outdoors in the heart of the wilderness, beneath star-filled skies and surrounded by the natural sounds of the Kalahari—an unforgettable and immersive experience.

Sundowners

A long-standing safari tradition, sundowners are served at sunset with a selection of drinks, cocktails, and snacks, set against the striking backdrop of the Kalahari landscape.

Main Dining Area

Guests gather around a communal table in the main lodge, sharing meals, stories, and camaraderie in a warm and welcoming atmosphere.
