Travelling far beyond the usual tourist routes, this expedition begins in Swakopmund before venturing into the remote north-western reaches of Namibia, eventually finishing in the beautiful Palmwag region. Every day brings new scenery, from towering dunes and rugged mountains to dry riverbeds and vast open plains where wildlife has adapted to survive in one of the harshest environments on Earth.

The Skeleton Coast is famous for its dramatic beauty. Massive sand dunes spill directly into the Atlantic Ocean, dense coastal fog rolls inland, and the remains of countless shipwrecks lie scattered along the shoreline—silent reminders of one of the world's most unforgiving coastlines.

Despite its harsh conditions, the region supports an astonishing variety of wildlife. Keep watch for Cape fur seal colonies, jackals patrolling the beaches, oryx, springbok, and perhaps even the legendary desert-adapted elephants roaming the dry riverbeds. Expedition Overview

Day 1 – Collect your Toyota Hilux 4x4 in Windhoek or Walvis Bay and enjoy a tour briefing at The Delight Swakopmund.

Day 2 – Swakopmund – Ugab Gate – Skeleton Coast National Park – Hoanib River – Terrace Bay – Wilderness Camp north of Möwe Bay.

Day 3 – Hoarusib River – Khumib Valley.

Day 4 – Khumib Valley – Sarusas Mine – Sarusas Spring – Agate Mountain – Camp near Angra Fria.

Day 5 – Angra Fria – Dunedin Star Shipwreck – Kunene River Mouth – Dune Camp.

Day 6 – Full day exploring the spectacular Kunene River Mouth.

Day 7 – Optional Skeleton Coast dune crossing – Hartmann Valley.

Day 8 – Hartmann Valley – Hoarusib Canyon – Puros Community Campsite.

Day 9 – Puros – Sesfontein – Palmwag Lodge & Camp.

Day 10 – Return your vehicle to Windhoek or Walvis Bay, or continue your Namibian adventure.

Detailed Itinerary

Day 1 – Swakopmund to Möwe Bay

Leave Swakopmund behind as your expedition heads north into the breathtaking Skeleton Coast National Park. Pause at the Uniab River Mouth for excellent birdwatching before following the Hoanib River toward Terrace Bay, your final opportunity to refuel before entering one of Namibia's most isolated wilderness areas. Continue north to your first remote campsite beyond Möwe Bay, surrounded by endless desert and ocean.

Day 2 – Hoarusib River to Khumib Valley

Today's route passes the wreckage of the Ventura Bomber, which crashed during a rescue operation in 1942. Continue through the Hoarusib River, where desert-adapted wildlife such as springbok and oryx are regularly encountered. Arrive in the spectacular Khumib Valley, where you'll spend the evening beneath a canopy of brilliant stars.

Day 3 – Khumib Valley to Agate Mountain

Travel across striking desert landscapes towards the historic Sarusas Mine, where colourful minerals including quartz and amethyst still scatter the ground. Visit nearby Sarusas Spring, an important water source that frequently attracts wildlife, before continuing to Agate Mountain for another unforgettable night in the wilderness.

Day 4 – Angra Fria to the Kunene River Mouth

Journey along the rugged coastline to one of the Skeleton Coast's most famous landmarks—the wreck of the Dunedin Star. Continue north to the magnificent Kunene River delta, where the river meets the Atlantic Ocean and birdlife flourishes. Your evening is spent camping among towering dunes overlooking this remarkable landscape.

Day 5 – Explore the Kunene River Mouth

Enjoy a relaxed day without moving camp. Explore the surrounding dunes, photograph the ever-changing scenery, observe the rich birdlife, or simply soak up the silence and isolation of this incredible wilderness. Early mornings and evenings provide excellent opportunities to search for the elusive brown hyena.

Day 6 – Skeleton Coast Dune Crossing to Hartmann Valley

Leave the coastline behind as you tackle spectacular dune systems en route to the remote Hartmann Valley. Your experienced guides carefully select the safest routes while regular stops allow plenty of time to admire the constantly changing desert landscapes. Oryx are frequently spotted roaming this remarkable region.

Day 7 – Hoarusib Canyon to Puros

Drive through the dramatic Hoarusib Canyon, one of Namibia's best locations to search for the famous desert-adapted elephants and other wildlife specially adapted to survive these harsh conditions. Continue to the remote settlement of Puros for an overnight stay at the community campsite.

Day 8 – Sesfontein to Palmwag

Refuel and restock in Sesfontein before travelling south to Palmwag Lodge & Camp for your final evening. Relax and reflect on an incredible expedition through one of Africa's most spectacular and least explored wilderness destinations before your onward journey the following day.
