Exquisite landscape and plenty of wildlife nestle the Great Fish River Lodge within the 54 thousand acres of Kwandwe Reserve. Being malaria-free, Big-Five safari destination in the Eastern Cape of South Africa, guests experience exclusive accommodation and gourmet food making for an African Dream come true. At the lodge, the vastness of the reserve can be admired when soaking in the magnificent views from the expansive viewing decks or the privacy of the suite's private plunge pool.

The camps nine spacious and well-appointed suites were designed so that the surrounding spectacular landscape can best be enjoyed. The ideal floor-to-ceiling framed glass doors can be folded back leading to the endless wilderness. The en-suite bathrooms feature a bath as well as indoor and outdoor showers, a separate w.c and twin basins.

For the warmer summer months, overhead fans, as well as air conditioning, provide the necessary cooling. The thatched veranda as well as the private plunge pool on the terrace, which are available in all the suites, offer the best of outdoor living.

The most popular activities enjoyed by guests are the early morning and late afternoon safari drives during which visitors experience up-close encounters with Africa's incredible wildlife which include the "Big Five", namely leopard, lion, rhino, buffalo and elephant. Walking safaris, which are accompanied by armed game rangers, provide a chance for guests to learn more about the smaller creatures in reserve as well as its flora and fauna.

A unique and extraordinary activity is the Rhino Conservation Safari for which a three night, four-day safari is recommended. At this moment travellers may participate in Kwandwe's rhino-darting and notching programme during which a rhino is darted to plant microchips into the horns which are essential for the preservation of this endangered species.

Dining is a special affair whereby delicious meals and treats are available throughout the day at various dining locations.  The mouth watering African-inspired meals at Kwandwe may best be enjoyed on the private decks, in the elegant candlelit dining room as well in the outdoor boma set under the starlit sky.

Game drives

The scheduled game drives take place early in the mornings and late in the afternoons / evenings when game watching is at its best.  Admire the reserve's magnificent wildlife from a close distance which is home to the "Big Five" (lion, elephant, rhino, buffalo, leopard).  Professional trackers and game rangers share them in depth knowledge of the wildlife, the region's flora and vegetation and the rich birdlife.

Walking safaris

Walking safaris through the untamed Kwandwe Private Game Reserve are thrilling experiences during which guests learn about the smaller animals which live in this region as well as the plants, grass and flowers found here.

Save the Rhino Drive

The 'Save the Rhino Drive' provides 3 - 4 hours of tracking a rhino with a specialist ranger and tracker team.  Guests learn about the habits of this endangered species, as well as about rhino poaching and the reserves own conservation efforts.  This activity can be booked at an additional cost, a minimum of two guests are required and one needs to be 16 years or older in order to participate in this extraordinary wildlife activity.

Photographic Safari

The private photographic safaris and tutorials are tailor-made to meet the individual requirements of guests.  There is no age limitation for this activity, guests of all ages are welcome.  A minimum of two guests is required in order for the private photographic safari to take place.  This specialized safari and the tutorials cost an additional fee and are not included in the lodge's safari overnight package.

The nine spacious suites provide beautiful views of the surrounding scenery. The doors reach from the floor to the ceiling holding back to maximize the wilderness setting. The en-suite bathrooms are complete with indoor and outdoor showers as well as a bath, a separate w.c and twin basins.

Direct flights from Port Elizabeth to the Lodge's Airstrip takes around 30 minutes. Flights directly to the Game Reserve are scheduled for early afternoon, to allow arriving guests to enjoy an afternoon game drive on their day of arrival.

Guests are advised to fly to Port Elizabeth and proceed to Kwandwe by road or air transfer. The distance from Port Elizabeth to Kwandwe is 160km (100 miles) and can be comfortably covered by road in 1 hour and 45 minutes.

On arrival, guests will leave their vehicle at the car park at Heatherton Towers and will be transferred to the Lodge of their choice by an open safari vehicle.


On site parking facilities are provided for guests.
