Makumu Private Game Lodge Klaserie region is blessed with an abundance of untamed wildlife, the 'Big Five', beautiful birdlife and unique flora and fauna. The Klaserie River bisects this reserve on its way to the Olifants River and Mozambique.

Covering over 60 100 hectares and being part of the Greater Kruger National Park of South Africa, the wildlife-rich Klaserie Private Nature Reserve is home to the Makumu Private Game Lodge. 

Makumu Private Game Lodge guests are accommodated in well-appointed, an en-suite bedroom which is decorated with features of local tribes. Guests may choose to stay either in the Zulu King Suite, the Bushman King Suite, the Ndebele King Suite or the Impi Deluxe Suites.

The Bushman suite features decorative items which are used by the by for hunting and to the storage of food. A colourful and creative decor is found in the spacious Ndebele suite which reflects the richness of their vibrant lifestyle.

The suites feature en-suite bathrooms as well as a wooden deck with a hammock which provides a welcoming place for relaxation. The walls of the Zulu Suites are adorned with shields to reflect the spirit of the Zulu warriors. Its twin bedroom adjoins the main suite. This suite is ideal for children or two guests sharing.

The wooden decked makes for a fantastic dining location. Surrounded by the gentle flicker of candles, lanterns and the open fire, guests enjoy delicious meals surrounded by the sounds of wildlife in the distance. The outdoor swimming pool offers some great refreshment during the hot summer months.

Visiting elephant herds even come to quench their thirst here. Overlooking a waterhole, set high in the tree canopy, the Tree House offers an ideal location to spend time during the warm afternoons with a beverage, a book and binoculars to observe the passing wildlife in its natural habitat.

Exciting activities include the late afternoon/evening safari drives as well as the early morning safaris which lead guests through the untamed Klaserie Private Nature Reserve.

Open land rovers with professional game rangers and trackers provide unforgettable early morning and late evening safaris for guests. The wake-up call offers the first start for safari enthusiasts whereby guests enjoy coffee or tea as well as rusks and biscuits before embarking in the untamed African wilderness in search of lions, leopards, buffaloes, rhinos, elephants, giraffes, zebras and much more.

During the drive, a tea break with muffins is offered at one of the reserves scenic locations. Guests then arrive back at the lodge for a delicious breakfast. During the late afternoon safari drives, a sundowner stop with a gorgeous sunset makes for a unique experience. A part of the late afternoon safari drive is conducted in the dark during which time spotlights are used to encounter the more elusive nocturnal animals. Guests then return to the lodge for refreshing pre-dinner drinks served around the fire.

Makumu vehicle access to the lodge is via 4x4 vehicle only. The Airport at Hoedspruit Eastgate Airport is the closest airport for guests who wish to arrive by plane. With regular flights from Johannesburg (OR Tambo) to Eastgate, this is a suitable travel option.

Flights also land here from Cape Town. Guests travelling via the Hoedspruit Eastgate Airport are met by lodge representatives and transferred to the Lodge. The road transfer time from Hoedspruit to lodge is about 1 hour.

The Suites at Makumu don’t have electricity, they are powered by solar panels. There is however electricity in the main lodge.
