Deep in the southern Okavango Delta, where the winding Xudum River flows through vast floodplains and ancient riverine woodland, Mokolwane Plains offers an exceptional new way to experience the wild heart of Botswana.

Set within a remarkable 200,000-hectare private wilderness concession, this contemporary tented camp is surrounded by an extraordinary concentration of wildlife. The area is particularly renowned for its leopard sightings and has provided the setting for wildlife productions including Big Cats 24/7 and Living with Leopards.

Mokolwane Plains shares this untouched wilderness with just one other camp, creating a rare sense of space, privacy and exclusivity. Accommodation

Created by award-winning Jack Alexander Studio, Mokolwane Plains offers a contemporary interpretation of the classic safari tent. The design is deliberately understated, allowing the surrounding wilderness to remain the main attraction.

The camp is unfenced, with carefully designed pathways that accommodate the natural movement of wildlife. Even elephants can wander freely through the camp, reinforcing the feeling of being completely immersed in the Delta.

Each expansive suite is arranged within one of three interconnected pods, carefully positioned to maximise privacy, shade and uninterrupted views across the Xudum River and surrounding plains.

Inside, approximately 100 square metres of air-conditioned living space extends from a private lounge into a spacious bedroom and generous outdoor areas. Shaded salas, daybeds and private dining spaces encourage guests to embrace life outdoors, while private plunge pools provide the perfect place to relax during the heat of the day.

Natural materials, timber and handcrafted furnishings reflect the colours and textures of the surrounding landscape. Earthy tones inspired by termite mounds, storm clouds, river water, tree bark and red lechwe create a sophisticated interior that remains deeply connected to its environment.

Camp facilities

At the centre of Mokolwane Plains, the communal spaces gather around a magnificent fig tree and open towards sweeping Delta views. An interactive kitchen, private dining room and temperature-controlled wine cellar create an intimate setting for exceptional meals and carefully selected wine pairings.

Between safari activities, guests can unwind at the 18-metre swimming pool, wellness spa or gym, while the Den and Curiosity Shop provide additional spaces to relax and explore.

As darkness falls, the elevated fire deck overlooking the water becomes a natural gathering place. Here, guests can share stories from the day's safari while listening to the sounds of the Okavango emerging from the night.

Wildlife

Mokolwane Plains is situated within NG29, one of Botswana's largest private concessions, covering an extraordinary 200,000 hectares. The vast wilderness encompasses clear waterways, hippo-filled lagoons, reed-lined islands, open floodplains and mature riverine forests.

This diverse ecosystem supports abundant year-round wildlife. Large herds of elephant and buffalo are regularly seen alongside red lechwe, zebra, giraffe, wildebeest and kudu. The abundance of prey also sustains an impressive population of predators, including lion, leopard, African wild dog, cheetah and spotted hyena.

The area is home to the famous Xudum Pride, while leopard remains one of the region's greatest attractions. NG29 has one of Africa's highest recorded leopard densities, combined with exceptionally low visitor numbers, making it one of the Okavango's most rewarding destinations for intimate big-cat encounters.

Beyond the headline species, guests may encounter African wildcats, bat-eared foxes, jackals, honey badgers, meerkats and mongooses, while night drives reveal a different side of the wilderness with aardwolf, aardvark, porcupine, civet and genet.

Birdlife is equally impressive, with more than 400 species recorded in the concession. Highlights include Pel's fishing owl, wattled crane and martial eagle, while vast flocks of quelea provide spectacular aerial displays as falcons pursue them across the open skies.
