A secluded retreat set within Botswana’s pristine wilderness, offering refined comfort alongside an immersive connection to the landscapes, wildlife, and cultures of the Okavango Delta.
Xaoo Safari Camp is inspired by the vast, untamed beauty of the Okavango Delta, the largest inland delta in the world. Following an initial visit to the Delta in 2016, the area’s exceptional scenery, biodiversity, and cultural richness revealed a clear purpose: to share this extraordinary region while prioritising conservation and cultural preservation.
Equal importance is placed on safeguarding the delicate ecosystems of the Delta and respecting the traditions of the communities that have lived in harmony with this environment for generations. The name Xaoo, meaning Buffalo in the Sesarwa language, reflects the frequent presence of buffalo in the nearby marshes and symbolises strength, resilience, and connection to the land.
The Chalets
Xaoo Safari Camp is located near the small village of Xoxao in the eastern Okavango Delta. The surrounding area is home to diverse Batswana communities, including the Basarwa, Bayei, and Baherero peoples. The location lies approximately seventeen kilometres west of Shorobe Village, placing the camp deep within a tranquil and wildlife rich section of the Delta.
The accommodation consists of six raised luxury tented chalets designed to blend naturally into the environment. Each chalet accommodates up to three or four guests, making the setting well suited to couples, small families, or groups of friends. Generous spacing between the chalets ensures privacy and a peaceful atmosphere.
Each chalet features a spacious interior with thoughtful comforts that support relaxation between activities. The design combines natural materials with practical amenities, offering an authentic yet comfortable bush experience.
Chalet features include:
The Mokoro experience
The mokoro experience is widely regarded as the defining activity of the Okavango Delta, offering a rare and intimate way to explore its waterways. At Xaoo Safari Camp, this experience takes place within a quiet and unspoiled network of channels, providing a deep sense of immersion in the Delta’s natural rhythm.
Traditional dugout canoes glide silently through reed lined channels and open lagoons, guided by local experts with extensive knowledge of the area’s wildlife and plant life. The absence of engines allows guests to observe the Delta in its purest form, from aquatic species and birdlife to larger animals along the water’s edge. The mokoro journey offers a calm, reflective encounter with one of Africa’s most remarkable ecosystems.
Wildlife
The journey from Xaoo Safari Camp to the mokoro station forms part of the wildlife experience. Travelling through a private concession, the route passes through varied habitats that support an abundance of animal life. The area remains uncrowded, allowing for uninterrupted wildlife viewing and a strong sense of exclusivity.
Sightings along the way often include antelope species grazing near water sources, elephants moving through open grasslands, and a wide variety of birdlife. This drive highlights the richness of the surrounding wilderness and offers memorable encounters before even reaching the water.
Conservation
Xaoo Safari Camp plays an active role in conservation by adopting sustainable practices and supporting wildlife protection initiatives within the region. Partnerships with conservation organisations contribute to research, habitat preservation, and responsible land management.
Environmental awareness forms an integral part of the experience, with an emphasis on respectful interaction with wildlife and minimal ecological impact. Through eco conscious operations and education, the camp supports the long term protection of the Delta’s fragile ecosystems and the diverse flora and fauna that define this landscape.
Giving Back
Xaoo Safari Camp is situated near the village of Xuxao, a small community of approximately three hundred residents within the NG35 concession. Support for this community focuses on essential needs such as access to clean water, food supplies, and sustainable employment opportunities.
Community engagement is based on long term empowerment rather than short term aid, contributing to improved living conditions while preserving cultural identity and self sufficiency.
