This off-the-beaten-track expedition ventures deep into Namibia's remote north-west, beginning in Swakopmund and ending in the rugged landscapes of Palmwag. Along the way, you'll travel through some of the country's most isolated and breathtaking terrain, guided by experienced professionals while enjoying the freedom of driving your own fully equipped 4x4.
Where Desert Meets Ocean
The Skeleton Coast is unlike anywhere else on Earth. Stretching along Namibia's wild Atlantic shoreline, it is a place of striking contrasts where towering sand dunes tumble into the crashing ocean, dense coastal fog blankets the landscape, and rusting shipwrecks stand as haunting reminders of a treacherous coastline.
This extraordinary wilderness is home to an incredible array of desert-adapted wildlife. Watch Cape fur seals gathering along rocky shores, jackals searching the beaches, and, if you're fortunate, encounter the famous desert elephants wandering through the dunes. Every day reveals a landscape that feels untouched by time, offering endless opportunities for photography, wildlife encounters, and unforgettable adventure.
Long known as "The Land God Made in Anger" by the San people and once feared by Portuguese sailors as "The Gates of Hell," the Skeleton Coast remains one of Africa's most mysterious and captivating destinations.
More than simply a road trip, this expedition is an immersive journey into one of the world's most remote and awe-inspiring landscapes—an adventure that challenges, inspires, and leaves a lasting impression.
Expedition Overview
Day 1 – Collect your 4x4 in Windhoek or Walvis Bay. Evening tour briefing at The Delight Swakopmund.
Day 2– Swakopmund – Ugab Gate – Skeleton Coast National Park – Hoanib River – Terrace Bay – Camp north of Möwe Bay.
Day 3 – Hoarusib River – Khumib Valley.
Day 4 – Khumib Valley – Sarusas Mine & Spring – Agate Mountain – Camp near Angra Fria.
Day 5 – Angra Fria – Dunedin Star Shipwreck – Kunene River Mouth – Dune Camp.
Day 6 – Leisure day exploring the Kunene River Mouth.
Day 7 – Skeleton Coast dune crossing (optional) – Hartmann Valley.
Day 8 – Hartmann Valley – Hoarusib Canyon – Puros Community Campsite.
Day 9 – Puros – Sesfontein – Palmwag Lodge & Camp.
Day 10 – Return your vehicle in Windhoek or Walvis Bay, or continue your Namibian adventure with an extended itinerary.

Detailed Itinerary
Day 1 – Swakopmund to Möwe Bay
Depart Swakopmund and head north into Skeleton Coast National Park. Stop at the Uniab River Mouth for birdwatching before following the Hoanib River towards Terrace Bay, the final fuel stop before venturing into the remote northern section of the park. Continue to your first wilderness campsite north of Möwe Bay.
Day 2 – Hoarusib River to Khumib Valley
Today's drive passes the remains of the Ventura Bomber, which crashed during a rescue mission in 1942. Journey through the Hoarusib River, where desert-adapted wildlife such as oryx and springbok are often seen, before reaching the spectacular Khumib Valley for an evening under the stars.
Day 3 – Khumib Valley to Agate Mountain
Travel through colourful desert landscapes to the historic Sarusas Mine, where quartz, amethyst and other minerals remain scattered across the ground. Visit Sarusas Spring, renowned for attracting wildlife, before continuing to Agate Mountain where camp is set up for the night.
Day 4 – Angra Fria to the Kunene River Mouth
Follow the dramatic coastline past Angra Fria to the famous wreck of the Dunedin Star, one of the Skeleton Coast's most iconic shipwrecks. Continue to the Kunene River delta, where abundant birdlife flourishes before arriving at your spectacular dune camp.
Day 5 – Explore the Kunene River Mouth
Enjoy a full day without breaking camp. Explore the surrounding dunes, photograph the dramatic scenery, or simply relax and absorb the silence of this remarkable wilderness. Dawn and dusk provide excellent opportunities to search for the elusive brown hyena.
Day 6 – Across the Skeleton Coast Dunes to Hartmann Valley
Leave the coastline behind as you navigate magnificent dune systems en route to Hartmann Valley. Frequent stops allow time to appreciate the ever-changing desert scenery while your guides select the safest routes through the dunes. Oryx are commonly encountered in this region.
Day 7 – Hoarusib Canyon to Puros
Drive through the striking Hoarusib Canyon, an area famous for desert-adapted elephants and predators specially adapted to survive these harsh conditions. Continue to the remote settlement of Puros for an overnight stay at the community campsite.
Day 8 – Sesfontein to Palmwag
Refuel and restock in Sesfontein before travelling to Palmwag Lodge & Camp for your final evening. Reflect on an unforgettable journey through one of Africa's most remote and spectacular wilderness areas before departing the following morning.
