“The Elephant Express”: Zimbabwe’s amazing 80km safari train
The iconic, one-of-a-kind rail car, “The Elephant Express,” has undergone a complete top-to-bottom refurbishment, including newly engineered wheels and axles, fully restored bodywork, refreshed upholstery, and beautifully refinished wooden interiors. Ready once again for an exciting season, it offers guests an unforgettable way to experience Zimbabwe’s wilderness.
The Elephant Express Sundowner Run is available to guests staying at Bomani Tented Lodge and Camelthorn Lodge. This scenic journey travels across the sweeping Ngamo Plains, departing from Ngamo Siding toward Ingwe Siding before returning.
The Ngamo Plains are the largest savannah grassland region within Hwange National Park and are widely regarded as one of Zimbabwe’s premier wildlife-viewing destinations. Travelling aboard this private rail car along the historic Cape-to-Cairo Railway route during the golden hour offers guests an extraordinary safari perspective, with opportunities to spot lion, wild dog, cheetah, elephant, giraffe, zebra, and large herds of wildebeest.
With chilled beverages, gourmet canapés, and expert guides on board, the journey unfolds at a relaxed pace, allowing time for photography stops and culminating in a spectacular African sunset over the plains—an experience unlike any other.
Approximate departure times vary seasonally:
May to August: Depart Ngamo Siding at 16:00, return by 18:00
September to April: Depart Ngamo Siding at 16:30, return by 18:30
The railcar has been specially designed for immersive wildlife viewing, featuring open sides for unobstructed photography and roll-down canvas screens for protection during poor weather. The single coach accommodates up to 22 passengers around elegant teak tables and includes an onboard chemical toilet. A wide central aisle allows guests to move comfortably throughout the carriage as wildlife sightings unfold.
On Sundowner Runs, guests are served snacks and a selection of beverages including local beers, wines, and spirits. On southbound journeys from Dete Railway Station, a light lunch is served before departure. An onboard guide-host is available throughout the trip to answer questions and ensure guests are well looked after, while the experienced drivers often enjoy sharing stories and local knowledge.
Safety is a top priority. The railcar is equipped with independent engines and gearboxes at both ends, allowing it to travel safely in either direction. Passing sidings are positioned every 10 km and coordinated by National Railways of Zimbabwe traffic control. The drivers are highly experienced former railway professionals who complete annual refresher training and remain in regular radio and cellphone contact with traffic control throughout the journey.
As the Elephant Express operates on a daily schedule managed by the National Railways of Zimbabwe, departure times may occasionally be affected by delays or cancellations beyond the lodge’s control. Guests are advised that same-day international flight connections from Victoria Falls are not possible. An overnight stay in Victoria Falls before and after the rail journey is therefore recommended.
Pick-up and drop-off points are Dete Railway Station in the north and Ngamo Siding in the south, with a short 15-minute game-drive transfer connecting the railway to Bomani and Camelthorn lodges.
