These are not leisurely walks through a park—they are true wilderness expeditions. Depending on the itinerary, you’ll track wildlife, navigate varied terrain, and explore remote areas where there are no roads, no crowds, and often no signs of previous visitors. Some journeys even involve walking between camps, creating a genuine sense of exploration and adventure.

Every itinerary is custom-designed to suit your level of fitness, interests, and preferred safari style. To ensure each guest enjoys the most appropriate experience, walking safaris are divided into three categories.

Stroller

Perfect for first-time walkers or guests seeking a more relaxed experience, the Stroller option includes easy walks of approximately one to two hours each day.

Routes typically follow riverbanks, floodplains, or natural waterholes before returning to camp or concluding at a designated collection point. The remainder of the day is spent enjoying traditional safari activities such as game drives, boating, or other wildlife experiences.

Hiker

The Hiker experience is suited to guests who enjoy longer walks and are comfortable spending three to four hours exploring on foot each day.

These walks venture deeper into the wilderness, providing opportunities to track animals, learn traditional bush skills, and cover greater distances while discovering the remarkable landscapes surrounding camp. Walkers usually return to camp for lunch before enjoying additional safari activities during the afternoon.

Explorer

Designed for experienced and physically fit adventurers, the Explorer category offers the most immersive walking safari experience.

Guests should be prepared to walk for up to six or seven hours a day when required. Some itineraries involve trekking between camps, while others begin with scenic helicopter transfers into remote wilderness areas before continuing entirely on foot.

Meals and rest breaks are often enjoyed out in the bush, with guests returning to camp only at the end of the day. These expeditions focus primarily on walking, with game drives included only if specifically requested. Night drives may also be arranged where permitted.

Tailor-Made Walking Safaris

Every walking safari is individually crafted around your fitness level, interests, and preferred style of adventure. Destinations are selected not only according to the walking experience but also the additional activities you wish to include, such as mokoro excursions, boating, canoeing, or traditional game drives.

Accommodation is based around fully serviced mobile safari camps positioned in some of Botswana’s most pristine wilderness areas. Many itineraries also incorporate one or two nights at carefully selected safari lodges, while selected expeditions include unforgettable sleep-outs beneath Botswana’s spectacular star-filled skies.

Child Policy

Children aged 12 years and older are welcome on Walk Botswana Safaris when accompanied by their parents or guardians.

Participation in certain walking activities is subject to the discretion of your guide, based on safety considerations and the child’s ability. Family accommodation includes spacious tents with an interleading ensuite bathroom.

Children under 12 years of age may be accommodated on request and are assessed on a case-by-case basis.

Itinerary Planning

Walking safaris can operate as fully mobile expeditions with road transfers between camps, or as pop-up camps combined with permanent safari lodges, provided the minimum stay requirement is met at each destination.

Minimum Stay Requirements
Okavango Delta: Minimum 3 nights per location
Kalahari, Nxai Pan & Makgadikgadi: Minimum 4 nights per location for standalone safaris
Kgalagadi: Minimum 5 nights for standalone walking expeditions

Camp Accommodation
Luxury Safari Camp

Luxury camps feature spacious 3 x 4 metre Sahara tents furnished with either twin beds or a king-size double bed. Each tent includes an open-air ensuite bathroom with a bucket shower, running water basin, and flushing toilet.

The camp also features a dedicated lounge tent, while the main communal area is sheltered beneath a large 24 x 12 metre stretch tent, providing elegant lounge spaces and a comfortable dining area for guests.

Classic Safari Camp

Classic camps offer comfortable 3 x 3 metre dome tents equipped with twin stretcher beds and high-density foam mattresses.

Each tent has its own private open-air ensuite bathroom featuring a bucket shower and traditional long-drop toilet. Guests gather beneath a spacious 11 x 7 metre stretch tent, which serves as the camp’s communal lounge and dining area.

Both camp styles provide an authentic wilderness experience while ensuring comfort, excellent service, and access to some of Botswana’s most spectacular and remote safari destinations.
