Frogging Safari

With over 32 species of frogs inhabiting the AmaZulu Private Game Reserve, Amakhosi Safari Lodge is the perfect place to enjoy a unique frogging safari, along with Big Five experience!  Recent “froggers” include renowned Michelle Garforth, donned their wellies and flashlight in hand and enjoyed the night calls of all that goes “ribbit”.
 
A frogging safari introduces the Amakhosi guest to a very different bush experience. Guests are supplied with a frogging kit and head out into the reserve at dusk with a guide in search of as many frog species as possible. As frogs are identified, they are caught briefly for everyone to observe these fascinating creatures before being returned to their nightly rituals.

Malaria Status and Animals
  • The Amakhosi Safari Lodge is in the Malaria free area on the Mkuze River in KwaZulu-Natal.

    The diversity found in this reserve includes savannah, mountains and wetlands which make it the ideal home to “Africa’s Big Five" as well as giraffe, warthog and hyena beside the over 15 different antelope species, hippopotamus, and crocodile. The wetland surroundings offer no less than 400 bird species

There are six river suites at the Amakhosi Safari Lodge. These luxurious suites have ceiling-high windows and a private viewing deck which overlooks the river. Rooms are decorated in traditional Zulu colors and are built in the shape of a Zulu shield.  Each suite can accommodate two children and comes standard with convenient amenities.

Honeymoon Suite

The Umtwana Suite is the Honeymoon Suite at Amakhosi Safari Lodge. This private suite has high thatched ceilings and glass walls.  The ultimate privacy is ensured when staying in the African suite. Umtwana means "a child of Royalty" in Zulu. The suite is laid out in a planned open fashion with a bedroom, sitting area, en-suite bathroom as well as a private jacuzzi and hammock which overlooks the river.

Exit from Johannesburg on the Witbank N4
Take the Middelburg exit to Hendrina
Continue towards Ermelo on the N11
Continue towards Piet Retief on the N2
Stay on the N2 North until you reach Pongola

From Durban (4 1/2 hours):
Exit from Durban to Stanger on the N2 North
Staying on the N2 North, continue past Empangeni to Pongola

From Pongola (half an hour):
Turn down the R66 to Nongoma
Continue for about 22 km
Turn right at the R69 towards Vryheid
Continue for 2 km and turn left down gravel road
Follow the AmaKhosi Lodge signs
