Dining & Wining

Ant's Nest Game Lodge takes great pride in their sumptuous home cooking, dining in a variety of places and outside whenever possible. Morning game activities are finished off with breakfast. Lunch is served at about midday followed by high tea in the mid-afternoon before afternoon game drives. Dinner is a delicious three-course meal or barbeque which is often served next to the fire under the stars. The chefs cater to all dietary requirements, although prior notice is necessary.

Horse riding
  • The herd of over 60 horses includes two competent guides lead some famous children's ponies and each ride, leading the emphasis on safety at all times.
  • The rider may wish to take part twice during one day which the opportunity to experience a riding safari holiday.
  • All guests are are welcome to ride, and the main aim is to have fun!
Guided walks

For those guests who like to discover the outdoors and take in the fresh air, then this activity will suit your needs perfectly.  Some guests may often miss the smaller details of the beautiful environment when on a vehicle or horseback, so these guided walks are highly recommended.  While these can be in the form of a gentle stroll, the more energetic can hike over the plains and up impressive gorges.

Game drives

The guides are available to take guests in an open 4x4 Land Cruiser either for morning or afternoon game drives or using a spotlight at night to find elusive nocturnal animals, such as the rare brown hyena, aardvark bushbaby and porcupine. 

The advantage of a game drive is that you can cover more ground across the game reserve in the Waterberg. Game drives and walks can often be combined to make game viewing and photography more exciting.

Superior Standard Room - Rondavel

The Rondavel is a welcoming and comfortable double room which has been built in the traditional circular form featuring a thatched roof.  The verandah provides a seating area with day bed.  The bedroom offers a four poster bed in addition to a day bed which is suitable for a child who wishes to share the room with parents.

Directions

Directions to Ants Nest from Johannesburg:

1. From OR Tambo International Airport takes R21 to Pretoria
2. After about 15-20 minutes you will see an off-ramp road that says Pretoria East or Pietersburg (now called Polokwane) N1, take this off ramp and continue the N1 north
3. Once on the N1, you will go past the outskirts of Pretoria and continue for at least 60-80 minutes
4. At the third toll station (this is known as the Kranskop Tollgate) ensure you are in the very left lane as you will coming off the highway here. Turn left towards Nylstroom or Modimolle on the R33
5. After about 10 km pass straight through Nylstroom or Modimolle and continue for 60kms to Vaalwater
6. Go through Vaalwater. On reaching the Total Garage and Kwikspar, turn right on the R33 towards Ellisras or Lephalale
7. Follow this road for 11kms - take right hand turn down the broad gravel road to Dorset
8. Follow this for 10.5 km on the left you will see a sign for Ants Nest, with a thatched entrance. Open the gate and follow the road for about 3kms down into the valley and to the lodge. There are signs indicating lodge.
