Dining at Camp

The central complex of the camp consists of a thatched library, a comfortable lounge and dining area, allowing one to relax and savor the serenity and peace of this charming area. Breakfast might be enjoyed in camp on cooler and rainy days or as a picnic on warmer, sunnier days while dinner is served in a romantic lamp-lit setting.

Activities, Sports & Leisure

Wildlife activities

Morning drives set off in search of the Kalahari’s most fascinating inhabitants, the meerkats. Due to an ongoing habituation programme, guests can get up close and personal with these creatures.

Evening excursions bring with them the elusive brown hyaena, which due to a Ph.D. research agenda, are habituated and so are commonly seen at camp. The brown hyaena is found only in southern Africa, and is the third rarest large carnivore in Africa, with only about 8,000 in the wild. The brown hyaena is a timid, nocturnal species rarely seen by humans.

Excursions

Camp Kalahari offers excursions to a remote cattle post, where guests can learn about the traditional culture of the Botswana people. The famous Chapman’s Baobab is close by and is acknowledged to be the third largest tree in Africa. The tree was a camping site for early explorers such as Livingstone and Selous.

Guests also have the opportunity to travel down to the Makgadikgadi pans where guests can ride a quad bike across the pans. There is not one visual landmark to be seen, and one swiftly loses one’s sense of perspective in the pans that are inhabited by a few gazillion invisible brine shrimp!

Early in the morning guests can comb the edge of the extinct lakeshore to find some of the many stone tools and fossils that litter the pan surface. Zuhoasi Bushmen trackers give guests an insight into their culture. A small group of these extraordinary men guide guests on a morning walking safaris, offering a window into the past.
