Activities, Sports & Leisure

Game drives

The game drives at the Gwahumbe Game Reserve are in open 4×4 vehicles accompanied by a qualified field guide. The lodge has two 10-seater Landcruisers and two Unimogs, which are used for larger groups. 

These exciting game drives are the best way to admire the beautiful fauna and flora offering visitors to get close with the game in a natural setting. Travellers stand an excellent chance to view the game which includes, amongst others, rhino, wildebeest, hippo, giraffe, zebra and many antelope species.

The morning game drives include tea, filter coffee, hot chocolate, rusks, biscuits as well as muffins plus snacks en route.  The afternoon game drives include a cold drink of choice and snacks en route.

Guided nature walks

Guests are taken on an informative and exciting walk with one of the lodge's knowledgeable field guides.  Walking through the reserve offers the chance to get in touch with and learn more about the smaller animals in the reserve as well as its plants.  The walk usually takes about 1 – 1 ½ hours.

Bird watching

In this area alone, over 180 bird species have been recorded making it a bird watchers paradise. Bird species include forest birds such as the Trumpeter Hornbill and colourful Narina Trogon, waterfowl, grassland “little brown jobs”. The bushveld birds such as thrushes mouse birds and barbets can also be admired here. A variety of raptors of which the Crowned Eagle is recorded to have bred in the Valley for over twenty-five years can also be found. Another endangered species which can be looked for is the Ground Hornbill.

4x4 drives

The Gwahumbe Game Reserve is a popular venue for 4x4ing as well as new 4×4 vehicle launches. The Lodge was host to the Isuzu’s Driver Academy as well as Mercedes-Benz Umhlanga for the launch of the G55. This area is the perfect destination for 4x4 self-drives, and guests are encouraged to traverse the entire reserve unguided. For travellers who do not own four wheel drive vehicles, Rhino bikes are available for hire.

Mountain biking and trail running

The Gwahumbe Nature Reserve in KwaZulu-Natal features a fully marked 10km mountain bike and trail run route for guests to enjoy.  This course forms a part of the Mid-Illovo Husqvarna Classic race, which is an annual event. Day visitors are welcome to make use of the track as well.

Gwahumbe Conference Venue

The thatched conference centre at Gwahumbe accommodated up to 50 conference delegates in various seating configurations. This formal venue is ideal for training and strategy meetings as well as seminars and product launches.

With its beautiful and natural surroundings, this place is conducive to a relaxed and yet productive working experience. Conference pads, as well as pencils, mints and fruit juices, are provided to conference delegates. Free Wifi is available in the conference venue and the main lodge.

Malaria Status and Animals
  • This game reserve in South Africa enjoys an abundance of magnificent animals and birds.  A variety of Antelope can be encountered here such as Blesbok, Nyala, Impala, Black and Blue Wildebeest, Kudu, Reedbuck, Eland and the endangered Blue Duiker. 

    White Rhino, Giraffe, Zebra, Caracal, Large Spotted Genet, Black Backed Jackal, Porcupine, Cape Clawless Otter, Thick-tailed Galago, Aardwolf and Warthog are also found on the farm. 

    Hippos were re-introduced into Malinga Hippo Pool in 2000, a first for the region.

  • Gwahumbe offers a great Junior Rangers program where the kids are supervised in various outdoor activities. Booking for these activities are essential.  Furthermore, the lodge's spa offers wonderful spa and beauty treatments to smaller guests.

The chalet's kitchen is fully equipped adjoining the outside lapa.

Each Stone Chat provides an en-suite bathroom with shower as well as tea and coffee making facilities. From the veranda, magnificent views of the Gwahumbe Valley can be admired. The chalet's kitchen is fully equipped adjoining the outside lapa.

Self catering MZIGI BUSH CAMP ( 5X doubles/10 sleeper)

Mzigi Bush Camp offers accommodation for ten guests. This self-catered camp, set by the river in the Gwahumbe Valley, provides the a natural African bush experience. Five A-frame thatch and reed huts on stilts offer each two mattresses to accommodate two guests.

Linens for the bedding are not provided at the camp but can be arranged at an additional cost.  To reach the Mzigi Bush Camp, a 4x4 vehicle is required.

 The camp is equipped with:
