Game Drives and Walking Safaris

The The exciting game drives for guests staying at the Khwai River Lodge in Botswana take place in 4 x 4 open land cruiser and are led by experienced guides.  Wildlife includes big cats such as lions and leopards, hippos, rhinos, antelope, giraffe and buffalo. This is the only region in Botswana, Southern Africa, where the Big Five can be seen. Game viewing vehicles sit up to 6 guests and every guest enjoys a window seat.

On a walking safari, visitors spot unusual things close-up. Groups can only be up to six persons and a guide with a two-way radio. Bird-spotting on walking safaris is superb so be sure to take along binocularsNight game drives present a rare opportunity where travellers can be surrounded by the infinite darkness of the African bush. Nocturnal animals are out on the prowl and a filtered spotlight on the vehicle may pick out two shining eyes.

San village experience

The Khwai River Lodge in Botswana is close to a San bushmen’s village. Although this is not a tourist attraction, the community may invite guests into their home.

Here the community has adapted ancient traditions to modern times. There are no modern communications or electricity, schools or hospitals. Instead, a traditional healer crushes herbs, roots, and other local ingredients into medicines for minor ailments. Many of the women that live here practice crafts such as basket weaving.

Luxury Twin

The exclusive Khwai River Lodge is beautifully designed to blend into its natural surrounding environment.  The luxury tents at Khwai are on raised wooden platforms from where magnificent views can be enjoyed. A traditional African thatch roof shades the luxury tents.

The large private decks of the tents have chairs and a hammock, which are ideal for viewing wildlife from the comfort of one's own luxury tent. The interiors of these luxury tents at the Khwai River Lodge are luxuriously appointed with such comforts as an en suite bathroom; private fully stocked mini bar, four poster bed complete with mosquito netting, as well as a controlled air conditioning.

Directions

The magnificent Khwai River Lodge in Botswana has its private licensed airstrip. The best way to Khwai is via Maun, which is accessible by scheduled, daily flights from Johannesburg.

The Khwai River Lodge is also accessible from Livingstone, Zambia, and Kasane, Northern Botswana. Access from Maun, Livingstone and Kasane is all by shared charter aircraft operated by Mack Air.

All aircraft used by Mack Air are by single-engine. Private charters are available on request. Khwai can also be accessed by 4x4 vehicles, provided the driver has experience of driving in Botswana, as road conditions are treacherous and may vary depending on the prevailing weather conditions.
