Activities, Sports & Leisure

Game drives

The adventurous game drives are offered twice a day, early in the mornings and late in the afternoons/evenings when game watching is at its best. Visitors have the opportunity to admire the magnificent wildlife which is home in this reserve.  Knowledgeable game rangers and trackers share their vast knowledge about the region's wildlife, as well as the flora and vegetation with its abundant bird life.

Walking safaris

During the walking safaris, which are accompanied by armed game rangers, guests enjoy face to face encounters with the wildlife and also learn about the smaller animals which live here as well as the region's plants, grass and flowers.

Save the Rhino Drive

'Save the Rhino Drive' is offered exclusively at Kwandwe providing visitors with 3 - 4 hours of tracking a rhino accompanied by a specialist ranger and tracker team.  One learns about the habits of this endangered species, as well as about rhino poaching and the reserves own conservation efforts.  This activity is booked at an additional cost, a minimum of two guests are required and one needs to be 16 years or older in order to participate.

Photographic Safari

Kwandwe's private photographic safaris and tutorials are tailor-made to meet the individual requirements of travellers.  There is no age limitation for this activity, participants of all ages are welcome.  A minimum of two guests is required in order for the private photographic safari to take place.  This specialized safari as well as the tutorials cost an additional fee and are not included in the lodge's safari package.

There are three suites available at the Uplands Homestead, which feature private bathrooms. Claw-foot bathtubs, exquisite antique mirrors and yellowwood chests blend beautifully with the modern conveniences like air-conditioning, in-room safes and other amenities.  Guest staying in this private villa at Kwandwe enjoy having a private butler, chef and 4x4 safari vehicle with game ranger available. 

 

Directions

Direct flights from Port Elizabeth to the Lodge's Airstrip takes around 30 minutes. Flights directly to the Game Reserve are scheduled for early afternoon, to allow arriving guests to enjoy an afternoon game drive on their day of arrival.

Guests are advised to fly to Port Elizabeth and proceed to Kwandwe by road or air transfer. The distance from Port Elizabeth to Kwandwe is 160km (100 miles) and can be comfortably covered by road in 1 hour and 45 minutes.

On arrival, guests will leave their vehicle at the car park at Heatherton Towers and will be transferred to the Lodge of their choice by an open safari vehicle.
