Wildlife activities

Morning game drives are offered just before dawn to look for the big cats which are usually active in the early hours. Midday guests can sit, and bird watchers along the river while the guides can help visitors identify the local bird and plant species. In the late afternoon game drives are offered, allowing guests the opportunity to view the sunset with drinks and snacks as the nocturnal animals start to come out. For full day game drives, picnic boxes, and cold drinks can be provided. Guests can also experience the thrill of hot air ballooning above the Masai Mara at an additional cost while private safaris are available on request.

Guests at Mara Plains Camp can pay a visit a local Maasai village to learn more about the traditions and culture of the community.

  • The Mara Plains Camp is in a quiet, uninhabited area of the Masai Mara Game Reserve. This area of the Masai Mara offers a wide variety of habitat, much of it prime predator country.

    Masai Mara Game Reserve is one of the greatest wildlife destinations in the world. The area is famed for the wildebeest and zebra migration.

Social Responsibility
  • Mara Plains has been constructed without any cement, meaning that if it is removed it would leaving no trace on the environment while each room is set on a raised deck with three feet which are placed on a flat river stone.

    Water for the camp comes from a well next to the river and treated via a series of pumps. Hot water is heated in eco boosters and solar heaters while the camp's eco-heaters run on sustainable fire wood from exotic plantations.

    Electricity in the camp is provided by deep cycle batteries charged by a generator as well as through solar power. All drinking water is bottled and guests are given a personal water bottle upon arrival.

    The small amounts of plastic, glass and metal waste collected at Mara Plains as sent to Nairobi for re-cycling while combustibles are incinerated on site. Organic waste decomposes in a bio pit.

The Mara Plains Camp caters for just 14 guests in seven spacious tents. The en-suite canvas tents are built on raised decks and power is provided via a solar inverter. The seven uniquely octagonal canvas rooms can be opened on three sides to the outside. Each tent features a dressing area and a private verandah with seating area. The en-suite bathrooms offer guests a double basin vanity, toilet and shower.

Daily scheduled flights are available to Ol Kiombo airstrip departing from Wilson Airport.
Daily scheduled flights to Ol Kiombo airstrip also depart from Nanyuki/Lewa/Laikipia.
The transfer to Mara Plains takes 20 minutes away and is included.
