Game Viewing

Guests at Quatermain's can enjoy the excitement of "Big 5" safaris on both the award winning Amakhala Game Reserve and the world renowned Shamwari Game Reserve, the latter by an exclusive private arrangement, in a malaria free area.

Our twice daily 3 to 4 hour Game drives which depart directly from camp, are guided by our experienced rangers.  These safaris are sure to give you the best possible chance to see a variety of wildlife whilst sharing the knowledge that these dedicated guides have built up over the years.

To round off the safari experience, guests staying for two nights or longer will have the opportunity to partake in a guided bush walk, a chance to see and learn about the smaller and less obvious aspects of our environment.

Enjoy the opportunity of seeing a myriad of species in one of the most diverse habitats in Southern Africa, both Reserve's stand at the merging point of five of South Africa's seven biomes.  The result of this diversity, is a higher than normal carrying capacity for all types of fauna and flora.

Species that one could possibly see on the Amakhala and Shamwari Game reserves during the safari trips are : Lion, Savannah Elephant, Square-lipped Rhino, Hook-lipped Rhino, Cape Buffalo, Cheetah, Southern Giraffe, Brown Hyena, Aardvark, Aardwolf, Porcupine, Bat-eared Fox, Chacma Baboon and Vervet Monkey.

The reserves are also home to the following antelope species : Common Eland, Greater Kudu, Waterbuck, Red Hartebeest, Blesbok, Black Wildebeest, Bushbuck, Impala, Mountain Reedbuck, Springbok, Common Duiker, Cape Grysbok, Steenbok and Blue Duiker.

Malaria Status and Animals
  • It is recommended to wear long-sleeved clothing in the evenings and to use insect repellant.  The lodge is malaria-free.

    Please be aware that wild and dangerous animals are to be found on the reserve and should not be approached or interfered with in any way.  You are strongly cautioned to heed all safety precautions as issued by the staff and not to walk around unescorted, particularly after dark.

Quatermain's 1920's style expedition camp by the heydey of exploration, the golden era when there adventure was around every corner. The intimate 6-bed tented camp gives you the possibility to experience "Africa under canvas", with three crisp white 1900's style safari tents fitted out with military campaign style furnishings; the choice of pioneers, hunters and explorers of that time.  Each tent has a delightful en-suite bathroom.

Directions

Approximately 70 km from Port Elizabeth/Gqeberha on the N2 towards Grahamstown/Makhanda.
• Shortly after the Makhanda road sign, you’ll see a low grey-walled entrance on your left. Turn in and enter the gate.
• Drive ±3 km to the parking area where you may park your vehicle. A ranger will meet you and escort you to the camp.
