Chimpanzee Trekking in Kyambura Gorge

The main highlight of a stay in Uganda is the tracking of chimpanzees.  This fantastic activity is on offer in the dramatic Kyambura Gorge which is located on the eastern side of the Queen Elizabeth National Park. 

Offering way more than just close encounters with the chimpanzees in their natural habitat, travellers learn about the ecosystems of Kyambura Gorge’s 'underground' rain forest with its vegetation types, enjoy bird identification and their behavior as well as hear about the unique chimp and monkey ecology.  This fascinating tour takes between 1 to 3 hours.

Boat Tour

An activity which is not to be missed is enjoying a boat tour on the Kazinga channel.  This exciting trip brings travellers close to hundreds of buffaloes and hippos, while elephants and other animals can be observed along the shores.  Scheduled as well as private boat trips can be booked.

Bird watching

The great variety of habitats in the in Queen Elizabeth National Park offers a home to over 600 species of birds.  Bird watching from the camp or within the national park is a rare treat for bird watching enthusiasts.

Game drives

A fantastic safari experience through Uganda's Kasenyi Plains or the Ishasha region provide a great opportunity to encounter buffaloes, elephants, antelopes and many more animals.  When embarking on safari with an experienced guide during the early mornings or at dusk provide the most successful ways to track lions, leopards and other wildlife. 

The professional safari guides are available from 6:30am onwards and are to be booked the day before with the Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA).   A night safari is also available whereby visitors get familiar with the nocturnal animals.  Open safari vehicles can be booked with the UWA.

Wildlife Research Tours

The Wildlife Research Tours allows travellers to join one of the national park's research teams and to actively participate in the monitoring of certain animal species and their behaviour.  Taking between one to three hours, this activity takes place early in the morning and in the evening.

The self contained Bandas are located among the indigenous vegetation of the camp.  This room type has been built on a raised platform and consists of canvas and natural materials. 

Large windows with mosquito nets offer a wonderful view and ensures guests a most natural safari experience in Uganda's wilderness.  The Bandas provide private terraces overlooking the seasonal Kamera river.  An eco toilet as well as an outside shower are available.

Non self-contained Tent

The Non self-contained Tents offer budget safari accommodation for travellers.  These unique African style tents offer comfortable beds, a bedside table as well as a power outlet for charging electrical equipment. 

Built under a thatched roof, the private terrace is a welcoming place for relaxation.  Visitors staying in these tents share the lodge's communal ablution block which provides flushing toilets and showers.  Bedding, linen as well as towels are provided.

For guests who prefer added privacy and a real bush experience, enjoy staying in one of the two self contained tents which are located a short distance away from the lodge.  These tents are ideal for families as an extra tent can be set up on the adjacent platform.  This type of accommodation is recommend for the adventurous traveller and those guests who have their own transportation as walking to and from the main camp is not recommended during the night.

Directions

The Queen Elizabeth Bush Lodge in Uganda is situated just off the main road Kasese, Mbarara. Coming from Kasese, 500 m after the bridge over Kazinga Channel, the lodge's signpost directs travellers on a maram road which takes them to the camp, which is situated about 2 km further.
