Malaria Status and Animals
  • The Madikwe Reserve in South Africa's North West Province is a malaria-free reserve which is home to Africa's "Big Five": lions, elephants, rhinos, buffaloes and leopards.

The 75,010 hectare Madikwe Reserve, which is in the North West Province of South Africa, was initially established in 1991 to restore and return the land to its former natural environment.

A unique partnership between the state of South Africa, local communities and private enterprise have transformed this area by way of the largest, phased translocation operation ever undertaken worldwide: the so-called "Operation Phoenix" has been an astounding success.
