Twice daily game drives

At the Sandibe Okavango Safari Lodge in Botswana, the professional rangers and trackers share their knowledge and understanding of the African bush and its inhabitants with their guests.  

Guests staying at the Sandibe Safari Lodge in the Okavango Delta of Botswana have the opportunity to explore the rich wildlife surrounding the lodge on early morning and late afternoon / evening game drives in an open air safari vehicle.  These exciting game drives are accompanied by an armed guide and tracker.

The landscape which is being traversed during these game drives includes floodplains, as well as seasonal grassland, woodland, shrubland and savanna.   During the game drives, guests track the 'Big Five', as well as a variety of other animals, including the semi-aquatic lechwe and sitatunga antelope.

Interpretive bush walks

The Sandibe Okavango Safari Lodge in Botswana offers guests leisurely walks in the surroundings of the Camp to explore the sights, smells and sounds of the Okavango Delta, accompanied by an armed ranger.  

Visitors learn about how elephant are vital to the survival of the fan palm, try to spot the elusive Pel's fishing owl and keep an eye out for the shy bushbuck.

Mokoro river cruise

Explore the waterways of the Okavango Delta in Botswana together with experienced guides is a pure adventure. During the Mokoro River Cruise, guests learn the fascinating details of the Delta's network of channels which are fringed by dense reeds and papyrus.

A variety of fish can be found in the clear waters and fishing trips can be arranged on request during the fishing season which is from 1 March to 31 December. Please note that the Mokoro river cruise is dependent on water levels and may not be offered year round.

Day Itinerary

Guests staying at the Sandibe Okavango Safari Lodge in Botswana may enjoy thrilling wildlife encounters while enjoying the indulgence and romance of Africa.

Morning Game Drive:

As dawn breaks over the African bushveld, guests are awoken. The guide discusses the route and planned sightings over fragrant tea or coffee and morning biscuits or rusks. During the early morning game drives, guests explore the floodplains and grasslands of the Delta in search of the Big Five, encountering large herds of elephant and buffalo or beautiful sable and roan antelope.

Breakfast:

Upon return to the Sandibe Okavango Safari Lodge, a delicious breakfast awaits, with platters of fruit and cheese followed by a selection of hot breakfast dishes. Guests may choose from eggs, oats, waffles or a number of other options.

Lunch:

A short walk near the lodge can be enjoyed, accompanied by a guide, who shares his insight into the smaller animals and vegetation in this region of Botswana. A mouth-watering lunch in the shade of the riverine forest.

Afternoon Tea:

Guests are welcome to relax with a refreshing dip in the swimming pool or indulge in an afternoon siesta.  A late afternoon tea is served before participating in the afternoon game drive.

Afternoon Boat Ride:

If the waters are high enough, guests staying at the Sandibe Okavango Safari Lodge may explore the crystal clear channels of the Okavango Delta in Botswana on a mokoro or in a motorised boat. Many unusual bird species, frogs and other intimate details of the Delta lie waiting to be explored.

Dinner:

Guests return to the Sandibe Safari Lodge for a delicious dinner under African skies.

  • The Okavango Delta in Botswana is a malaria area, and necessary precautions should be taken.

    Guests staying at the Sandibe Okavango Safari Lodge have the opportunity to observe the 'Big Five' as well as other water and land animals which are home in the Okavango Delta.

Children Policy
  • Children are welcome to stay at the Sandibe Okavango Safari Lodge in Botswana. However, children five years and younger cannot participate in the regular game drives and river cruise activities due to safety.

    Children 16 age and older can take part in guided walks and the mokoro river cruise activities. Childminders are available and can be booked at an additional cost. Children aged 6 to 11 years are accommodated on game drives at the lodge manager’s discretion. An extra bed can be arranged for a child sharing its parents’ suite. No more than one triple in the camp is possible at any one time.

Social Responsibility
  • The Sandibe Okavango Safari Lodge supports the conservation of wildlife and contributes to its neighbouring communities in various ways.   The Lodge seeks to limit the impact regarding fossil fuels, the use of renewable energy, water and waste management, and recycling.  At Sandibe in the Okavango Delta, alien aquatic weeds are eliminated, which has been selected by the conservation authority to pioneer a weevil breeding project in the Okavango Delta.

    Monitoring Wetland bird species

    Through the financial support of BirdLife Botswana, the magnificent Sandibe Okavango Safari Lodge contributes to the research which results in a better understanding of the population dynamics and ecological requirements of various wetland-dependent birds including the endangered Wattled Crane. These animal species are crucial indicators of the natural health of the Okavango Delta.

    Responsible Tourism

    The Sandibe Okavango Safari Lodge in Botswana is currently involved in several projects concerning the department of water affairs, the University of Botswana, the Harry Oppenheimer Foundation and the UNDP.

    Vegetable garden near the Okavango Delta, Botswana

    The Sandibe Okavango Safari Lodge together with the &Beyond Foundation cooperate with the government to plant a sustainable vegetable garden in the Shorobe community. A borehole and water tank were built, and guest donations to the &Beyond Foundation made it possible to purchase a delivery vehicle to transport the vegetables.

    This vegetable garden is maintained by the community members themselves, with assistance from the maintenance teams of game lodges. The lodges located in the Okavango Delta purchase fresh vegetables from Shorobe every month. Not only can the community members provide their families with fresh produce this way, but they also have a sustainable source of income.

Nestling beneath wild palms and magnificent fig leaves, eight thatched cottages are located on the edge of the Okavango Delta at the Sandibe Okavango Safari Lodge in Botswana.  Blending seamlessly with its surroundings, guests enjoy the quiet beauty of the Sandibe Safari Lodge while observing wandering animals. The sounds of Africa change when herds of as elephants splash in the waters, baboons chatter and birds call in the trees.

The spacious guest cottages feature large, airy screens and earthy ochre tones that bring the forest floor indoors while tactile textures resemble the natural beauty of the scenic surrounding area. Visitors can look out onto the  River from their king size bed or watch casual play on water from the private raised deck. The cottages also offer extensive outdoor showers.

The eight cosy African-inspired cottages offer ensuite bathrooms, twin hand basins, separate w.c and outdoor showers as well as a dressing area. The rooms at the Lodge are airy with all windows covered in gauze to maximise views of the forest. Each cottage at Sandibe features an elevated viewing deck which is perfect for intimate candlelit dinners.

Family Suite

The Family Suite is ideal for guests wishing to share their accommodation with the children.  This spacious suite features an organic design in line with its surrounding nature and offers hand-woven exteriors.

Directions

Air Botswana operates scheduled flights to Maun or Kasane in Botswana, Southern Africa. From there, it is a short flight by light aircraft to Chitabe airstrip, where guests are welcomed. A 45-minute drive in an open safari vehicle completes the journey to the Sandibe Okavango Safari Lodge.
